South Portland – Carl M. Hitchcock, 60, passed away on January 21, 2025. Born on November 2, 1964, in Jacksonville, FL. Carl was the son of Norma Hitchcock and the late Russell Varner Hitchcock.

He graduated from Samuel W. Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Carl pursued his dream of working in law enforcement by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Minot State University in North Dakota. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

On April 26, 1997, Carl met the love of his life, Casie Metcalf on a blind date. The couple married on August 10, 1998, and built a life filled with laughter, teasing, and unwavering love. Their song, “Just the Two of Us,” encapsulated their enduring bond.

Carl’s career began on July 20, 1998, when he joined the Cumberland County Jail as a corrections officer. Through hard work and steadfast commitment, he rose to the rank of sergeant, earning the respect of colleagues and inmates alike.

Carl was a man of many passions. He loved cycling, both indoors and outdoors, and was deeply dedicated to the sport. He loved his cycling team, Down East Racing, his cycling club Portland Velo and his cycling shop, CycleMania. He was an ardent Florida Gators football fan and had fond memories of proudly holding season tickets to Jacksonville Jaguars games. A multi-sport athlete, Carl played college soccer and hockey at the Portland Ice Arena. His taste in music was as bold as his personality, with favorites like KISS, Guns N’ Roses, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Carl was known for his stubborn determination, “Carl-isms,” and infamous “dumb dad jokes” that brought joy to those around him. Above all, he cherished his family, who remember him as a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend.

Carl is survived by his wife, Casie Hitchcock and their son, Andrew, of South Portland; his daughter, Ashley, and her children, Riley and Annelise, of Florida; his brother, Bruce Hitchcock, and wife Marion of Denver, Colorado; his mother, Norma Hitchcock; and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Russell Varner Hitchcock. The list of friends is long and he will be missed deeply by all.

  2. I’m deeply saddened by his passing. He’ll be missed by all his brothers/sisters, but I know he’s dwelling in the house of the Lord. Ride on Carl. They’ll never be another 14

  3. Heart of gold. Carried his heart on his sleeve. Straight shooter. Hard working. Caring. Honest. Was willing to work hard not just for his team but people in need. Great sense of humor. Respectful. Family man.

  4. One day we will ride again my brother! Our group rides here just aren’t the same without you. We miss you more than you’ll ever know. In the meantime rest in peace buddy!

  5. Carl was a wonderful member of the community… I’ll never forget when he would ride up to unhoused people on the street and connect them to services and lend an ear to really hear their needs. I will miss seeing Carl at CCJ, he had a brightness of spirit even when working in very difficult situations at the jail and treated everyone with such kindness and respect.

  6. Carl was kind and thoughtful. He was one of the best in corrections that I have had the pleasure of working with. Will miss you Hitch

  7. I pray that this candle lighting brings the Hitchcock family the comfort and peace that is needed during this time. -Truth-
