Resided in:
Scarborough, Maine
Liam Richard Coyne, 24, passed away in a tragic car accident on Friday, May 10, 2024, in Scarborough, Maine. Liam was born smiling on May 27, 1999, in Portland, Maine, and grew up in Cumberland, South Portland, and Higgins Beach. Liam’s shining light is still burning bright through his friends and family who loved him so dearly.
Liam attended Cumberland Community Nursery School and Greely Schools in Cumberland through 8th grade where he made special friendships that he cherished and maintained to this day. He moved to South Portland and graduated from South Portland High School class of 2018. Liam was embraced by his new community and made lasting friendships. He was a key player on the South Portland Red Riot’s basketball team that went to the State Championship two years in a row and received the Bob Brown Coaches Award for “Most Unselfish Player”. After high school Liam worked at Anderson Landscaping, SoPo Redemption, and Via Vecchia. Liam brought joy and happiness to everyone who crossed his path and his warm, kind, and caring heart brought people together.
Liam loved the outdoors, especially surfing at Higgins Beach; recently he surfed with his siblings and friends in Puerto Rico. His favorite winter sports were skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. Liam also loved dirt bikes, cars, boats, and motorcycles, basically anything with a motor. No matter the sport, basketball, football, baseball, or soccer … Lucky Liam was naturally gifted and everyone wanted him on their team. He loved our family and friend’s pets throughout his life. We all longed to be close to Liam since he lived life to the fullest while sharing his love of music, dancing, and singing. He was compassionate, selfless, funny, charming, charismatic, free-spirited, athletic, and determined, even when times were tough. The passing of his brother Eric left him brokenhearted. You knew Liam was special because he made you feel special. His heart was pure gold; he always put his family and those who loved him before himself. Throughout his life, he made many close friends who cherished him; many people are left with holes in their hearts.
Liam is sadly missed by his Mother Carmen Haggerty, Father Kevin Coyne and Partner Laurie Martens, Brother Jonathan, Sister Julianne, Grandmother Julie Haggerty, Aunts and Uncles Faith and Edward Haggerty, Richard Haggerty, Gin Gedney and Eddie Coyne, Peter Coyne and Jason Andrews, Godparents Serina and Frank DeWolfe, loving cousins, and many dear friends. Liam was predeceased by his Brother Eric, Grandfather Richard Haggerty, Grandparents Nancy and Edward Coyne, Aunt Judy Coyne, and Uncle Martin Coyne.

I will always remember Liam’s smile. He was so sweet and kind and wanted everyone to feel like they belonged.
Liam helped my mom move out of her house a few years ago and out of it, he got a used air conditioner. I’ve never seen someone smile so big over an old, heavy, noisy A/C. Liam found joy in the simplest things.
Happy Birthday Liam! ❤️ We love you forever and miss you forever.
Mom, Dad, Jonathan, Julianne
Liam and I became friends through mutual friends of ours, we instantly clicked. His personality was just infectious. I couldn’t help but smile and laugh around him. He ALWAYS made me feel safe. He was such a bright light in my life. We shared lots of laughs together and some cry’s too. I’ll miss him so incredibly much.
Liam, whom I only knew as Frog or Tree Frog for a long time, as a friend of my son Colby. Liam was such a nice young man when he was at our home.
Liam was such a nice kid! He was a good friend to my son. He and Colby are sure to be making music for all those in heaven❤️
My condolences to Liam’s family.
I had the honor to coach Liam in football. He was a rocket.
36 counter baby!!!

When I had my seizure summer before senior year Liam was there for me the moment I got out of the hospital at 3am and didn’t leave my side for 2 weeks.. just to make sure I was ok and safe.
Liam was a shining light in everyone’s life, there isn’t a soul who didn’t love him. I’m heartbroken he’s gone.
May the light he brought to the world continue to shine in all of us.
Friendly, welcoming, happy, kind and funny.
Liam was like a brother to my kids, Zach and Ariana. He brought positive energy to a room, was very respectful and a true gentleman. I always enjoyed my interactions with Liam – he was inquisitive, engaging and very extroverted. My heart goes out to his entire family and a bright light has been lost to so many. Gone way too soon but I am glad he will always be in so many of our memories.
I helped him gain traction with the knickname Frog.
There was nothing he wasn’t good at !
My little brother Shane’s best friend, like my brother ❤️
Goofy, handsome, selfless, loving, full of life, athletic, thoughtful, sweet, free spirit…
I will always remember Liam’s kind heart and ability to make everyone around him laugh and feel loved. Truly one of the brightest souls I’ve met. Rest in peace, Liam.
I met Liam through mutual friends you could say. I didn’t know Liam for very long, but he was one of the purest souls and brightest lights I’ve ever met. He knew how to light up a room just with his presence. He had a way about him that just made you feel safe and protected. I know how much he meant to everybody and I am so happy I got to know him for the short amount of time that I did. The world is a little darker without him here.
Rest Easy, Frog💚
Rest easy Liam💜 thinking of all that were close to him, what a genuinely good person he was. You will be so so missed dude
I don’t think I ever saw him without a big smile on his face & any time i was in the Higgins beach area there was good shot I would see liam out surfing/skating living life to the fullest. He was so kind & welcoming to everybody who knew him. Couldn’t help but be in a good mood in his presence, he knew how to make people laugh
Liam was a kind and fun-loving soul. I have very fond memories of us as teenagers and will never forget our sunrise swim last summer. The way he loved his people was so admirable, and we should all take a lesson from him on how to care for others. May his soul rest peacefully, and may the Lord protect and comfort his family and friends during these difficult times.
“Carmen, Kevin, Jon and Julianne, My heart felt condolences to you and your family and friends. I thought of you all as my extended family. I have so many very, very fond memories of all of you. Please know that my heart is with yours and I wish for comfort and peace in this very very difficult time. May God gracefully and gently lift Liam up to be with Eric in heaven. May they embrace each other and look over your family and keep you all safe. With all my love, Lisa Shain.”
He made sure everyone in his life was smiling and laughing. He gave so much love to everyone around him.
One of the most compassionate funniest people I knew, was always there for me and would always make me feel safe and protected around him. Known him since I was in elementary school, and not a day will go by I don’t think of him. He will be so missed and his life will continued to be celebrated everyday by all the people he loved and who loved him, he was one of a kind. Rest easy frog💚
How much love he gave to everyone. Forever going to miss my best friend.
Liam was the brightest light in this world, he had a heart of gold and was the sweetest soul out their. He had a laugh and smile that could make anyone’s day better. Liam was everything & more.
I went to school with him from K-8 and I wasn’t very close with him but I knew him well enough to know he was a really nice and good guy. Very kind and generous, great smile. I’m heartbroken.
To know Liam is to love Liam.
It’s true when they say what people remember most about a person is how you make them feel. Liam made everyone he encountered feel his warmth and his unwavering joy. He will always be a reminder in our darkest moments that there is always something to be thankful and happy for and to spread kindness and joy. We will continue to spread his love.
Thank you for the lessons friend, until we meet again. Rest easy.
Ray and I send our deepest condolences to you all. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
We remember Liam as a little sweet and funny boy, around the age of 5. He was joyfully running around playing with our children at the Super Bowl party. Cute little boy who grew into a fine young man. May he rest in peace.
I am so sad about Liam. You came up with the word for Liam that I was struggling to find…. Charming – polite, friendly, likable and engaging, whether he was at my house or he was counting my cans at SoPo redemption, I 100% enjoyed every interaction I had with movie-star-handsome Liam. I will forever remember his light smiley spirit in my heart and spirit. Love, Rhonda
When he hugged you, you knew it!
Liam my sweet Godson
The sweetest most affectionate boy, always smiling
Liam used to leave love letters in my daughter, Julia’s room when he was in 1st grade
He was loved by so many people
His sweetness and compassion
Liam, I am heartbroken from your loss.
His last words to me were “I love you more”
