South Portland ~ Alfred (“Fred”) Trani Jr. passed away at the Gosnell Hospice House on Sunday, June 23, at age 75 after a period of declining health. He was born and raised in Lynn, MA the son of Alfred and Rose Trani. Fred received his high school education at Austin Prep in Reading, MA before furthering his education at Western New England University in Springfield, MA where he received his bachelor’s degree. Returning to Boston, Fred joined his father in their family business, Trani Pastry Shop, that specialized in making chocolate eclairs that sold under private labels to supermarket chains throughout New England and upstate New York. In subsequent years Fred was the manager of Joe Tecci’s restaurant in the North End of Boston and the owner/chef of Pasta d’Amore at Faneuil Hall. It was during this time that Fred met his wife, Halley, through mutual friends. They soon discovered their shared love of sailing and spent many happy times with friends on Fred’s Sabre 34, Windsong, sailing out of the South Boston Yacht Club to destinations like Hadley Harbor on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Fred and Halley were married in July 1988 and soon moved to Maine where Fred continued his work in the food industry as a broker for several different companies. Upon retiring, Fred volunteered his time as a driver for ITN. He also worked with adults with developmental disabilities as a job coach while employed by Work Opportunities. Fred’s love of the ocean, sailing and living near the water were always sources of comfort and reflection for him, especially in recent years as his health declined. Fred loved his family and friends deeply. He maintained lifelong bonds with many of his Austin Prep classmates and he cared deeply for his neighbors in “the hood.” There weren’t many things Fred enjoyed more than a gathering of friends on the Windsong, at his Sunday afternoon Frog Pond Pub and his annual Ground Hog Day party. Fred’s family and friends will always be grateful to the LVAD team of doctors and nurses at Maine Medical Center for the many years of care and emotional support they provided both Fred and Halley. During the months prior to Fred’s passing he was under the expert care of Hospice of Southern Maine, and the LVAD team was always available when advice, guidance and an occasional hearty laugh were called for. Fred is survived by his wife, Halley; brother, Richard Rossi; sister-in-law, Sydney Manley (Hugh); nephews, Court (Bridget) and Ben Manley. The burial will be at the Longmeadow Cemetery in Longmeadow, MA at a later date. Visiting hours to celebrate Fred’s life will be held on June 28, from 4-6pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. In lieu of flowers, Fred’s family would be grateful for your contribution in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
