South Portland - William "Billy" or "Harry" Welch, 78, died on November 23, 2023. Harry was born on February 5, 1945, the son of the late William H. and Anna Welch. Harry grew up in Portland and summered at Peaks Island, attended St. Dominic’s School, and graduated from Portland High in the Class of 1963. After high school he attended Springfield College. On May 30, 1970, he married his wife of 53 years, Maureen “Mo” at St. Patrick's Church in Portland. No matter where Harry went, he always made a new close friend. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and was a great storyteller. Once you become Harry's friend, you never drifted apart, he had a way of connecting with people and keeping those connections, even back to his high school days. He was a 3-sport athlete at Portland High, and forever a “Bull Dog.” He and his family loved attending the PHS vs. DHS Thanksgiving Day Game, providing an opportunity to reminisce with old friends and make new ones. He cherished the many family trips from Disney to Marco Island. He enjoyed traveling to Ireland and Savanah with “the rebels/remnants” and friends. While an avid Patriots Fan, holding season tickets for 20 plus years, his pride and joy was watching “and bragging” about his children and grandchildren. He was proud to be a two-time Club Champion and captured 2 hole-in-one's at the Purpoodock Club where he was a member since 1979. A highlight in his golf career was caddying for Bob Toski who was playing against Harry's hero, Arnold Palmer, in the Unum Senior's Classic. He was a sensitive man with a heart of gold, always looked out for others, and always looked to do the right thing. Harry was predeceased by his sisters, Carol Ann Meehan, and Joan Rice. He is survived by his wife, Maureen Welch of South Portland; 2 daughters, Kristin Bathe and husband Landon , Missy Schifano and husband Jack; 4 grandchildren, Aidan, Bella, Jack, Fintan; godchild, Katie McDonald and husband Brian, Annie McKnight and husband Marty; family friend who he treated like a daughter, Carol Plummer and husband Steve; brother in law, Don Feeney; nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, from 4-7pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. A Funeral service will be held at 11am at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel on Wednesday, November 29, followed by a reception at the Purpoodock Club. 1. Maureen, I only heard yesterday from my brother Billy of the passing of Billy. I have many great memories of the Summers on the lake and playing “king of the raft”. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

    Cousin Bobby

  2. It is with great sadness that Brenda and I hear of Harry‘s passing. We want to offer. Our deepest condolences to Mo and all Harry‘s family. We knew him mostly through Purpoodock Club where he was without doubt a shining light. May he rest in peace, and may God hold him in the palm of his hand

  3. Maureen and Family,
Jean and I are deeply saddened to receive the news of Billy’s passing. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
    Glen & Jean Ramsay

  4. Billy would make a friend of anyone. A decent and kind man who many will miss.
My favorite memory was sitting out on the deck at Purpoodock this past summer with he and Maureen, having a drink talking about life and laughing. A beautiful couple!

  5. Maureen and Family, I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of Billy, it’s sad that the family is scattered, I wish we got to spend more time together like when we were kids! My condolences to you all, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Mo’s Mass. Cousin, Judy

  6. Dear Maureen, Missy, Kristen and family-

I was so shocked and saddened to learn the news about Billy. My heart hurts for you. I am so sorry.
I will keep you in my prayers. Lots of love-Katie

  7. We attended St Patrick’s Grammar School in Portland and played Little League Baseball — Little League 6 Thompson’s Pt. Portland. It was over 60 years since we had seen each other and met at the Planet Fitness Gym in Portland. As a kid I hung out with Billy growing up in Libbytown.

  8. I first met Billy when we were Freshman at PHS. He was in some of my classes and we also played on athletic teams together. We became best friends and always hung out together on Friday and Saturday nights and even during the summer playing legion baseball and eventually on twilight league teams.
After high school he went to Springfield College and I to UMaine but we stayed in touch and eventually he came home and went to work at SD Warren and I transferred to Gorham State. We were still best of friends for the next several years and were lucky enough to get into an Army Reserve Unit in Auburn or we would have been drafted and off to Vietnam Nam.
I eventually moved to Boston and Billy was lucky enough to have met and married Mo. I was best man at their wedding. A short time later Linda and I were married and Billy was an usher in my wedding.
Obviously Linda and I were shocked at Billy’s untimely death and he will always remain in our thoughts and hearts forever
Billy was a big part of my life which I will never forget

  9. Dear Maureen and family, I am so sorry for your loss of Billy. As you might remember, Billy and his family, grew up on Mass Ave, across the street from the Curran family. Our parents were great friends. RIP Billy and my sincere condolence to you all. Mickey (Curran) Thompson

  10. Sad to hear of Bill’s passing.
Condolences to Maureen & Family. Bill always greeted you with a great smile, always a joy to be around on the golf course and clubhouse. Sincerely, Sam Haddad

  11. We talked that night at the club, always great conversations and story telling, I am shocked to say the least. To Mo and the family, I loved the guy and happy to have so many good memories. So sorry for your loss. Thom

  12. Billy was the kind of friend that even if you haven’t seen him in years, when you did the conversation would pick up like no time had passed. He was “one of a kind”. Yvonne
