South Portland- Charles J. "Chuck" King, Jr., 67, died on February 6, 2023. Chuck was born in Portland, Maine on January 8, 1956 to Margaret O’Donnell King and Charles J. King. Chuck lived his entire life in South Portland, growing up on Plymouth Road and later moving to independent living at the Mill Cove Apartments. He graduated from South Portland High School, a proud member of the Class of ‘77. Chuck was an avid sports fan who loved all the New England teams, but above all he was a lifelong Red Sox fan. He rarely missed a game on television, whether they were winning or losing, and went to a game whenever he could. He could tell you who was scheduled to pitch a week out at a time, and was always current on their win-loss record. Chuck was a familiar face in South Portland, working thirty-one years as a bagger and carryout for Shaw’s Millcreek until he retired in 2016. He was a frequent patron of eating establishments in the Mill Creek area and many people knew him by name. His favorite place to eat was Uncle Andy’s until it closed; the Foggs treated Chuck like family, even naming the Chucky burger after him. After retirement, Chuck attended CAFE, Inc. in Westbrook and made many friends there. He enjoyed the excursions they offered and was a willing participant in all activities. He enjoyed traveling, especially if it meant going out to eat. Family was important to Chuck and he enjoyed large family gatherings, especially when he could catch up with his many cousins and their families. Many summer Sundays were spent at his aunt and uncle’s home on Watchic Lake, and he enjoyed several family bus trips to Boston and the Red Sox. Faith was important to Chuck. He was a lifelong communicant of Holy Cross Church and believed in helping others if he was able. In that spirit, Chuck signed up to be an organ donor and would be happy to know he helped others upon his passing. Chuck is survived by his brothers John (Julie) King of South Portland and Bob (Shirley) King of Cumberland. He has two nieces, Libby King and Annie (Andy) Hall, and two nephews, Josh King and Caleb (Annika) King. He is also survived by one aunt, Bette King of Standish, and has many cousins who were always very good to him and watched out for him. He was especially close to his cousin Carol Tuttle O’Brien. Visiting hours celebrating Chuck's life will be held from 4:00pm - 7:00pm on Tuesday, February 14, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 15, at 9:15am followed by a 10:00am Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. 5. Chuck, you will be missed by many. Your forever smiles and your forever happy go lucky personality. The family gatherings will not be the same. Rest in peace 💖

  6. I always appreciated Chuck’s wonderful joyous personality and wonderful smiles. He will truly be missed at family gatherings by many!!

  7. I was fortunate enough to have Chuck in class at SPHS. He was kind, helpful, polite and always eager to learn. He was a “Red Riot” through and through. We frequently saw and visited while having breakfast at Uncle Andy’s over the years. I loved that he called me Margaret (not Mrs. Anderson) and we always had a warm hug. I will miss Chuck. He was a wonderful man.

  8. I first met Chuck at Memorial Jr. High. We were merely school acquaintances, seeing each other in the hallways. He was a quiet, passive soul. I also remember seeing him at Shaws and thinking to myself “Good for him, he seems to be doing well”. I just want to say that while there may not be many schoolmates that post something here, I’ll bet a lot will remember him. My condolences to his family and friends that have been in his life recently. RIP Chuck. Mark G.

  9. I am saddened to have stumbled across the announcement of Chuck’s passing. My deepest sympathies to John, Bob and the rest of the King family. He loved his his family almost as much as he loved the Red Sox. All kidding aside, Chuck loved his brothers, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephew with all of his heart as well as his Shaw’s family. He so enjoyed attending every family function and celebration. It is genuinely heartwarming to have seen the unconditional love and support provided by the King family while honoring his independence. I was privileged to have had the opportunity to be a small part of his life. I will miss his smile, laugh, phone calls and stories. I miss all the breakfasts and lunches we shared at Uncle Andy’s and Olive Garden or stopping for coffee at Dunkin’…always hazelnut, black. Mill Creek will never be the same, but Heaven gained another angel.

  10. For about six years in the 1990s I worked with Chuck at Shaw’s Millcreek. I admired his hard work, willingness to always help where needed, his friendliness, and how he enjoyed his role at the Store. He knew his customers, and they liked him.

Chuck and I ran into each other many times over the years – whether at Shaw’s or other spots in the Millcreek area – and I always enjoyed our chats.

Peace be with Chuck and his family.

  11. I absolutely adored Chick and was blessed to have worked with him for several years as his caae manager. His phone calls throughout the week were always a highlight of each day. He made me smile along with so many others . Please know that Chuck touched so many lives and will never be forgotten. He and I would often have our “meetings” and visits at Bug Light Park and I will forever honor him when i have there now with a heavenly chat.
