Portland - Ron “Buzz” Corey, formerly of Gloucester, Manchester and Rockport, MA, went onto his happy hunting grounds on September 28, 2023.
Ron was the son of Lute and Doris Corey of Athol, Massachusetts. He was born in Athol on April 21, 1940, and graduated from Athol High School as Vice President of his class in 1958. He was the first athlete in the history of the school to earn a varsity letter as a freshman. His mile record in track stood for over twenty years, and he was eying the 1960's Olympics when he suffered an injury to his leg and no longer qualified.
He was the assistant manager of Endicott Johnson Shoe Store before going into the Army in the very elite army security agency known as “Shadow Warriors”, or old spooks and spies working of the far east during the Cold and Vietnam Wars.
After the service, he settled in the Cape Ann area where for years he coached little league and junior league baseball, and pee wee football. He was involved with the Manchester Boosters, played adult league basketball and softball for Table Four of Manchester and the Gloucester Post office. He loved golf and was a member of the Rockport Golf Club where he made a hole in one. Two of his favorite things were hunting and fishing, where he loved the solitude of the woods.
Ron was very active in school, community, state, and national projects. He was most proud of his position on a committee representing the 6th District in Congress to interview and make recommendations to Congress for any students applying to the military academies.
Ron was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Amvets and he was the Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans. He also served as a past president of Essex County Sport Fishermen and was the delegate to the Essex County Sportsman.
Ron retired from the Gloucester Post Office after 36 years, serving the last 15 years of his career as manager of the Magnolia Post Office.
He leaves his loving companion, Ann McRae of Portland, Maine; son, Ronald Corey, Jr.; a daughter, Marianne McGillivray; daughter-in-law, Sandy McGillivray; granddaughters, Mollie Mae McGillivray, Meagan and Malarie McGillivray; grandson, Stew McGillivray, Jr. and his wife Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Rocco, Stella, Grayson, Joseph, and Juliana.
Ron was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Provie; son, Stewart Mitchell McGillivray; brother, Kenneth Corey.
A Graveside Service celebrating Ron’s life will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, October 11 at Beech Grove Cemetery, Pleasant Street, Rockport, Massachusetts where Military Honors will be rendered. My wife and I met Ron and Provie when we moved to Magnolia in the early 90’s and became fast friends. My wife Andy won the Magnolia Post office NCAA basketball pool a couple of times and Ron got a kick that some of the locals were mad when they found out Andy was a woman! Ron was an avid golfer and owned every golf gadget imaginable. Every round he’d have another crazy gadget that he was certain would lower his handicap. Completely hilarious! When Ron, my wife and me won the DAV golf tournament, he had assured Andy there would be other women playing. Well, when we got there she was the only woman and was pretty annoyed. Ron had a way about him to quell a crisis and the rest is history. Ron, we love you and miss you… we are better people to have known you and cherish our many happy memories together…. peace…
Rest in peace Ron… you are deeply missed and will always be in our memories…
