Falmouth- Dorothy J. Getchell, 88, died peacefully on Friday, November 23, 2018 at Sedgewood Commons following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Dottie was born in South Portland, Maine on October 18, 1930 the daughter of the late Henry N. and Lillian G. (Barker) Gavett. She attended local schools in South Portland. On August 1, 1949 she married Kenneth R. Getchell. Dottie spent many of her early years working as full time homemaker raising her five children. Once the children were grown she went to work for several years at Fairchild Semi-Conductor. Dottie was an avid golfer, who won many amateur women's golf tournaments. She would play any opportunity she could find. Together with her husband Kenneth and several close friends, they would make an annual destination golfing trip. Dottie also enjoyed bowling, painting with oils, and playing cards. She was an excellent seamstress who made all of her own gowns for Marine Corp Balls and made many prom gowns for her daughters, she was also credited for making an entire wardrobe for Barbie and Ken dolls. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. Dottie will be remembered by family and friends as sweet, caring, friendly, and always a proper lady. Dottie was predeceased by her husband Kenneth R. Getchell in 1995; a son Keith R. Getchell. She is survived by three daughters, Kathy Dirckx of CA, Kim and her husband Tom Carmody of Windham, and Patricia and her husband James Leavitt of North Yarmouth; a son Michael and his wife Jacki Getchell of KS; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. A visiting hour celebrating Dottie's life will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A service will follow at the chapel at 1:00pm, burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Stevens Ave., Portland.
