Helga Anneliese Wilson

SOUTH PORTLAND - Helga Anneliese Wilson, 84, of South Portland, died Friday June 27, 2014 at her residence with her loving family by her side. She was born on Sept. 16, 1929 in Berlin, Germany, a daughter of Helmut and Gertrud Wolff. Helga attended school in Germany and moved to New York in 1947. She worked as a LPN at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York. In 1949 she moved to Biddeford where she continued her career in nursing. She later accepted a position at the Osteopathic Hospital in Portland where she worked for 21 years, retiring in 1972. Helga was known to be a very kind and compassionate nurse and was highly respected by the doctors and staff at the hospital. On November 24, 1962 she married Robert T. Wilson, Jr. in Portland. Helga was an active catholic and longtime communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church of South Portland. She joined the choir in 1965 and was a member until the parish was merged. Helga was currently a communicant of St. John and Holy Cross Parish and was still a member of the choir. She was an extraordinary gardener. Helga was a member of the Maine Rose Society; the Maine Hosta Society and the New England Rock Garden Society. She had many other talents and was an accomplished artist who taught painting classes at the Yarmouth Adult Education program for 9 years. She also was an excellent seamstress and knitter. Helga was also a member of the Osteopathic Hospital Golden Club. She will fondly be membered as a person who loved babies and kittens. She is survived by her husband Robert of South Portland; two daughters, Monika Wilson and Bill Orcutt of South Portland, Heidi Wilson of Portland; a son Alan Wilson and wife Sandra of Mechanic Falls; 6 grandchildren, Calvin Wilson, Kevin Wilson, Brian Wilson, Katie Hayward, Alan Wilson, Jr., Lindsay Wilson; 8 great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held 2 to 4 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed by a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow at New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. So sad to hear about Helga’s demise. I met Helga through the Lifeline program at USM and Basics/lifeline. She and I talked about our various woes and our various watercolor talents. I am so sorry for her family. She will be missed. She always made me laugh as I stood behind her during the class. Thank you, Helga for teaching me humility.
