Calvin A. Varney

March 31, 1947 ~ December 5, 2016
Saco- Calvin A. Varney, 69, of Hearn Rd., died Monday, December 5, 2016 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House following a brief illness; his loving family was by his side. Calvin was born in Portland, on March 31, 1947 the son of the late Orville and Rose (Mills) Varney. He attended local schools in Scarborough. On April 19, 1969 he married Patricia Ann Wells at Holy Cross Church in South Portland. Calvin owned and operated Varneys Auto Repair in Saco, a business he ran for more than thirty years, and was very proud of the many mechanic certifications he received during his career. In his younger years, he enjoyed building and driving race cars, which he raced all over New England including Beech Ridge and Oxford Speedway as part of the Northern NASCAR Circuit. He was proud of his many victories, while racing with brothers Albert, Forest and Linwood. He enjoyed going camping with family and friends. His greatest love was the time he spent surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren. His family describes him as a leader, self-reliant, loyal friend, provider, and having a great sense of humor. He was not a materialistic person, and appreciated the things in life that mattered the most. Calvin had a heart for those in need and will be sadly missed by those who knew him best. He was predeceased by his wife Patricia in 2002; two sisters Wanda Wescott and Hazel Davidson; four brothers Wesley, Linwood, and Forest Varney, and Norman Verrill. He is survived by two daughters Lisa and her husband Darrell Whitney, of Dayton, ME, and Beth and her husband Michael Withrow, of Merritt Island, FL.; a sister Gwendolyn Julien, of Bangor; two brothers Bradley and his wife Alyss Varney, of Richmond, and Albert Varney, of Scarborough; sister in law Maxine Varney, of FL; six grandchildren Lauren, Sarah, and Hayden Whitney, all of Dayton, Kiley and her husband Brent Washburn, of FL, and Mackenzie and Shane Withrow, both of FL; companion Abigaile Kane, of Scarborough. What a shock to learn that Calvin had passed on!I was last there Oct.6.Years and years I have been a faithful customer. What a skilled mechanic! I would leave my car there and he would give me a ride home and come get me when it was done..nobody does that!! Many times I would wait while work was being done and we would have memorable conversations.I know he enjoyed his life the last few years..especially his hot tub! I’ll miss you!!
