William N. VanOver

Mr. William N. VanOver, 69, of South Portland, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Seaside Rehabilitation Center. Born in Indianapolis, IN, on March 19, 1945, he was the son of the late Odis and Elizabeth VanOver. William honorably served his county in the US Coast Guard in the early 1960s. He married Maureen Lowe on August 12, 1967. Together, they shared 47 years of loving marriage before she predeceased him on November 8, 2014. Mr. VanOver was an active communicant of St. John the Evangelist, and was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus Council #8144. During his involvement with the K of C, Mr. VanOver served as Grand Knight in 1989-1990 and as District Deputy in 1991-1992. Above all else, William was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He supported his childrens extracurricular activities as they were growing up, and he had a special bond with his beloved grandson. William is survived by his daughters, Ingrid VanOver Smith and husband Charles of Simpsonville, SC, Cristin Michele Plaisted and husband Ron of Rochester, NH; son, Jonathan William VanOver and fianc Heather Milliken of South Portland; grandson, Owen Christopher VanOver. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the chapel at 9:15am on Saturday, February 28, 2015 followed by an 10:00am Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. Memorial Contributions may be made to Holy Cross Catholic School, 436 Broadway, South Portland, Maine 04106.
