SOUTH PORTLAND - Janet Emily McMonagle, age 96, known to all as Emily, died on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Maine Medical Center. Emily was born on October 10, 1918, in Bangor, the daughter of Lewis M. and Ethel (Rand)Blake. Following a childhood in Lagrange, she graduated from the University of Maine in 1940. She began a teaching career and family in Madawaska, and subsequently lived for extended periods in Augusta, Rumford, and South Portland, as she raised her family. She returned to teaching as an elementary school teacher in the Rumford and South Portland school systems. She remained a South Portland resident until her death. Throughout her life she was a member of many clubs and associations including the Rumford Study Club, Rumford Teachers Wives Club, Women's Literary Union, American Association of University Women, and the Cumberland County and Maine Retired Teachers Associations. Emily was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Edward Leo McMonagle, in 1999. She was also predeceased by a sister, Helen Simpson. Emily is survived by a son, Charles E. McMonagle and wife, Patricia, of New London, NH; daughters, Jane Thrift and husband, Joseph, of Scarborough, Ellen McMonagle of South Portland, and Anne Ingalls and husband, Andrew, of Cape Elizabeth; grandchildren, Katherine Cardinal and husband, Kevin, of Lynnfield, MA, Patrick McMonagle of Washington, DC and Nate, Lydia, and Alison Ingalls of Cape Elizabeth; great grandchildren, Rogan and Kelan Cardinal of Lynnfield, MA and a sister Josephine Bail and husband, Donald, of South Freeport. Visiting hours will be held 4-7p.m. Tuesday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Blake Scholarship, University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME, 04469-5792.Online condolences may be expressed below.
Dear Anne and family, So sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. Anne, I was a classmate of yours in Rumford. Not sure if you remember me but I have never forgotten you.
