Westbrook- Elizabeth J. McDonough, 78, formerly of East Bridge Street, died Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Gosnell Hospice House following a long illness, her loving family was by her side. Betty was born in Portland, Maine, on September 22, 1938 the daughter of the late Edward and Lovanthia C. (Emmons) Dennison. She attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School in the class of 1957. On July 11, 1979, she married John D. McDonough Sr., together they shared thirty eight years of marriage. In 1983, Betty started the ABC Taxi Company in Portland. Through her many years of dispatching, Betty gained not only a loyal fan base of customers, but also many new friends. Retiring in 2007, Betty handed the reigns over, maintaining the business in the family. In her spare time she loved traveling with her husband to Las Vegas and Foxwoods Casino. She enjoyed trips to Scarborough Downs to play the horses, playing the lottery, and going to Beano. She loved her weekend trips to Windham to visit her sister, hosting family gatherings, and spending time surrounded by her family and friends. Betty had two priorities in her life, work and family, but always put family first. Betty was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Nickerson; three brothers, John, Richard, and Leo Dennison. She is survived by her husband, John D. McDonough Sr. of Westbrook; two daughters, Mary Jo and her husband John Talbot of Portland, Elizabeth Bettiann McDonough and Companion Thomas Coyne of Gray; a son, Thomas McDonough and companion Norma Murphy of Westbrook; two step-daughters, Jennie Lee and husband Derek Marshall of South Portland, and Mary and her husband Patrick Sena of NC; two step-sons, John Jr. and his wife Maggie McDonough of S. Portland, and Thomas McDonough of Portland; two sisters, Gail Gray of NY, and Roberta and her husband Frederick McDonald of Windham; four grandchildren, Allan Thomas Saulle, Natalie Elizabeth Johnson, Ryan Thomas Fogg, and Betsy Elizabeth Staples; one great granddaughter, Taylor Elizabeth McDonough; many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to Gosnell Hospice House, Simmie Butts, Linda McDonough, Larry Fortin, and Gary Wilcox for all of their kindness during Bettys illness. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. A Memorial Service will be held at Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at 11:00am with the Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Dear Tommy, Betty-Ann and Mary Jo, So sorry to read of your Mom’s passing Despite the gruffness she was always a voice of reason and fairness in the often hectic world of Taxi drivers I am certain you all miss her terribly and whether it comforts you any or not, understand that myself and many other drivers have wonderful thoughts of “Big Betty” and mourn her passing with you Tom D’Alfonso.
