PORTLAND - Maria Anna Mary DAlfonzo McCartney, 88, of Portland, died April 24, 2015 at Avita of Stroudwater with her loving family by her side. She was born June 1, 1926 in Portland, a daughter of Constantino and Giacinta Sabatini DAlfonzo. Mary attended local schools. She married James M. McCartney at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church on April 29, 1961 and began raising their family. He predeceased her on April 20, 2014. Mary worked many years in retail for Woolworths and as bookkeeper for the family business, DAlfonzo and Sons. She also worked with the Portland School Department for nearly 10 years. She was a communicant of St. Josephs Church. Mary enjoyed bingo, slot Machines, gambling, cooking and baking, crossword puzzles, spending time at the lake or beach, going for rides and bowling in a bowling league. Above all else, she was devoted to her family. She loved family parties, as well as watching her children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. In addition to her husband, Mary was predeceased by her sister, Theresa Methot and brothers, Samuel, Joseph, John and Nunzi DAlfonzo. She is survived by her daughters, Theresa and husband Edward Dufour of Gorham, Mary Ann and her husband Edward Casey of CA; sons, James J. and his wife Michelle McCartney of Windham, John and his wife Gaylene McCartney of Westbrook; brother, Nicholas DAlfonzo; ten grandchildren, EJ, Molly and Gemma Dufour, Cameron, Caleb, Cayden, Olivia, Daniel, and Mary McCartney, Eddie Casey and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Avita of Stroudwater for the compassionate care they have provided to Mary over the last several months. Visiting Hours will be held from 4-8PM on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 9:15AM Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Josephs Church, 673 Stevens Avenue, Portland. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ctcrawford.com.
