John B. MacInnis

PORTLAND-John B. MacInnis, 79, formerly of Munjoy Hill, Portland, died Sunday June 22, 2014 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough following a long illness. He was born in Portland, a son of Donald D. and Florence Reidy MacInnis. John attended Cathedral Grammar School and was a 1952 graduate of Cheverus High School. Following high school John joined the Navy and was a corpsman for many years . He also served as a communications technician, deciphering code aboard ship and at many duty stations throughout the world. He served during the Korean Conflict and continued his naval career through the Viet Nam War, retiring as a Senior Chief in 1974. During his retirement, John enjoyed traveling the U.S. He also made many visits to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to spend time with his brother, Joe, and his family. John loved animals, especially dogs. He always had his dog riding beside him in his Jeep. John was known as a generous person, always quick to offer support to those less fortunate. Those that knew him well will also remember him for his quick, dry wit. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Mary Delaney, two brothers, Joseph and Donald MacInnis and his former wife, Barbara Sutton. Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia MacInnis, Paul Hibler of Portland, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. During the last 6 months of his life, he lived at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough where he made many new friends and received a level of care and compassion that provided him with peace and comfort. John's family (and Lucky) would like to thank the entire staff, especially the CNAs who cared for him with such respect each and every day. The care and friendship provided to John will never be forgotten. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited 9:15 a.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
