SOUTH PORTLAND Burleigh E. Leigh Lowe, 96, died Monday, September 12, 2016 at Portland Center for Assisted Living. Born in Jonesboro, Maine, on December 13, 1919, Leigh was the son of the late Albert McLaughlin and Vera Lowe. Leigh honorably served his country in the United States Army Air Corps serving during WWII. During his service, he was assigned to the 358th Fighter Group where he served in England, France and Germany. Upon his discharge, Leigh moved home to marry Halina Szczepanski in 1945. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage. For the majority of his working life, Leigh was a foreman with Amoco Oil Company retiring in 1979 after 38 years. Following his retirement, Leigh enjoyed working at Peerless Welding, Mermaid Transportation and as a funeral attendant with Conroy-Tully Funeral Homes. He was a communicant of Holy Cross/St. John the Evangelist Parish where he was very active over the years. Leigh was also a member of the VFW Post # 832. In addition to his parents and wife, Leigh was predeceased by his daughter Maureen VanOver, son-in-law, William VanOver and daughter-in-law Carmen Courtois Lowe. He is survived by his sons, Michael Lowe and wife Kathy of Naples and Rev. Christopher L. Lowe of North Andover, MA. Leigh is also survived by his grandchildren, Cristin Michele Plaisted and husband Ron of Rochester, NH; Ingrid VanOver Smith and husband Charles of Simpsonville, SC, Jonathan William VanOver and wife Heather of South Portland, Ryan Lowe of Portland; great-grandchildren, Owen Christopher VanOver and Ashlyn Lowe. Visiting Hours will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 from 2-6PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 9:15AM followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland.
