Michael Alan Hoglund

October 3, 1944 ~ December 23, 2015
Michael Alan Hoglund, Sr., 71, of Scarborough, passed peacefully on December 23, 2015. Born October 3, 1944 to Edward C. and Louise (Thorndike) Hoglund, he was a lifelong resident of the Portland area. He was the loving husband of Janice Caron Hoglund and father to six children. A last pleasure was meeting his newest grandchild age three weeks. Following early years in South Portland, the family moved to Portland where Mike attended Cathedral School and graduated from Portland High School Cass of 1962. In his youth he delivered newspapers and was a neighborhood errand boy. During his high school years he was taught meat cutting skills by his father at Eddies Grocery. Following high school, he mastered these skills with several local meat facilities like AP and Smahas. Recognizing the unmet need of food delivery to rural York and Cumberland Counties he purchased a Hood delivery route, which eventually expanded to two routes with the help of sons Michael and Mark. The success of adding meat products to the milk delivery system inspired the opening of a meat market in outer Scarborough known as Countryside Butchers. During the next three decades Countryside opened numerous additional sites but eventually focusing on rural areas such as Scarborough, Cornish, Fryeburg and one in Biddeford. He trained three of his sons as meat cutters. Michael was a member of the Knights of Columbus rising to the level of third degree. Michael enjoyed riding his Harley, boating on Lake Winnipesauke, listening to news programs and was a very particular gardener, both in planning and planting especially his beloved gladiola. He loved classic vehicles and numerous for show purposes. Michael loved to cook and share with his family and friends. Michael was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Janice and children, Timothy (Lena) Hoglund of Albany, New York, Christopher (Melissa) Hoglund of Scarborough, Michael Jr. ( Patricia ) Hoglund of Scarborough, Ann Marie (Robert) Mayberry, of Cape Elizabeth, Mark Hoglund (Tammy) of Arizona, Melissa (David) LaMontagne of Biddeford. Mike loved and adored his grandchildren Julia, Michael III, Danielle, Mark Jr, Brittnay, Joseph, Kayla and Sarkis Hoglund, Joshua and Emma Mayberry, Gage LaMontagne, and one great granddaughter, Jaleesa. Surviving siblings are sisters Joan Simmons of Washington, D.C, Elizabeth Hoglund (Anthony Buxton) of Portland and brothers Peter (Annette) Hoglund and Donald (Helen) Hoglund of Portland. These survivors are joined by seven nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
