Winona Rose Hilton

SOUTH PORTLAND - Winona Rose Hilton, 83, of South Portland died Saturday June 4, 2011 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was born in Weston, Maine at the foot of Peekaboo Mountain, daughter of Everett and Allie Hanscom. Winona attended school in Vanceboro and was a high school graduate. She met her late beloved husband, Charles P. Hilton Jr. while working together at the NABISCO plant in Portland, Maine. They were married on November 23, 1950 in Portland, Maine. They began to raise a family and Winona worked as a fulltime mother and home maker. As her children grew older, she accepted a position with the Sheraton Corporation in South Portland, Maine. Winona retired from the Sheraton in 1990. As a younger woman she was an active member of the Thornton Heights Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Winona was fond of family activities and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Winona loved the State of Maine and was under the impression that one needed a passport to leave the State. She was a primary caregiver to several family members and friends. She enjoyed animals and had many pets over the years. She will surely be missed by her two cats Smokey and Angel. Winona enjoyed spectator sports and was a football fan and she enjoyed the NASCAR races. Also, she was very fond of gardening.She is predeceased by her husband, Charles P. Hilton, Jr., on June 21, 1996. Survivors include her daughter Deborah Carter of South Portland; four sons, William Hilton and his wife Virginia of Houston, Texas, Charles P. Hilton, III of South Portland, Howard J. Hilton of South Portland, David R. Hilton and his wife Miranda of San Antonio, Texas; 9 grandchildren Kaitlyn and Paige Carter, Tracey (Chris) Schoettelkotte, Heather Dumais, Travis (Lou Ann) Hilton, Bailey and Alexander Hilton, Victor Hilton, Howard Hilton Jr., and 3 great grandchildren Jeffrey Schoettelkotte, Alexandra and Jenelle Dumais. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday June 6, 2011 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday June 7, 2011 at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Congress Street, Portland.
