Mary M. Hayes

Portland- Mary M. Hayes, 91, of St. Lawrence Street, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the Gosnell Hospice House with her loving family by her side. Mary was born on January 23, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of the late John and Emily (Bellows) McCormack. At the age of 14 she moved to Clifton, NJ with her sister who then raised her. She attended local schools in New Jersey and graduated from Clifton High School. Mary had a promising career ahead of her in fashion design, but after meeting the love of her life on a blind date, she put her career on hold. On September 4, 1944 she married Dr. James C.P. Hayes in New Jersey. Together they moved the family several places while James served in the Armed Forces. After many years of moving, Mary and Jim settled and made their home in Brunswick, Maine. She loved decorating her home, traveling with Jim to Ireland and Greece, planning and hosting dinner parties for family and friends, and playing bridge. An avid reader of mysteries and biographies, she enjoyed playing the piano, doing the New York Times crossword puzzle and shopping for that perfect fashionista look. Mary was predeceased by her husband Dr. James C.P. Hayes in 2002; a brother Jay McCormack and a sister Alice Woods. She is survived by a daughter M. Pamela and her husband Peter Macomber of Portland; three sons James F. Hayes of Standish, David R. and his wife Pamela J. Hayes of South Portland, J. Christopher Hayes of Great Diamond Island; a sister Margaret Bertsch of New York; five grandchildren Samuel and his wife Monet Macomber, Madeline Macomber and her wife Sydney Stolfus, Stacy Bates, Katherine Powell and Jenna Hayes; six great grandchildren Olivia Bates, Jaden Watson, Finnigan Macomber, Isla Macomber, Braden Farrin, and Ethan Hayes Wilson. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home 172 State Street, Portland. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, July 25, 2016 at Dimillos Floating Restaurant, Commercial Street, Portland. Burial will be private.
