Westbrook- Donald Francis Haskell, 86, of Farwell Court, died peacefully on Monday, June 5, 2017, at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation & Residence following a long illness. He was born in Portland, Maine on February 23, 1931, the son, of the late Bernard F. and Ella N. (Haynes) Haskell. He graduated from Cheverus High School in 1949, and did some college work before enlisting and serving in the United States Navy. After returning home from the Navy he married his school sweetheart, who he had known, since third grade, Alice E. Filieo at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on June 6, 1953. Together, they made their home and raised their family in Portland. Donald owned and operated Purity Diaper Service from 1956 until the early 70's, until going to work as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Don worked his way up from letter carrier to the director of sales and customer service, a position, in which, he developed many shipping policies for a Maine company, which are still in place today. He ended his career as Postmaster of Cumberland, retiring in 1995. He was a former member of the American Legion, Loyal order of the Moose and Rotary Club. He served on the board of directors and as a past president of Government Employees Credit Union. Don's greatest passion was golf, a game which he played every day, and he was past president of the Riverside Golf Association. He was an avid hunter, a runner and loved being someone that could fix anything, he was always willing to help a neighbor with a project or an odd job. He loved a good spirited conversation, or as he called them, mental gymnastics. His greatest passion was taking care of his "bride" whom he served as the primary care giver for the final three years of her life. Don was a fun loving guy with a stubborn side and a life motto "There's a right way, a wrong, and Don's way". Don was predeceased by his wife Alice Haskell in 2007; a sister, Christina Varuzzo; a brother, Bernard P. Haskell. He is survived by two sons, Peter F. and Kathleen Haskell of PA, and Steven and Diana Haskell of Sullivan; two daughters, Susan Haskell Correia and her husband Russell Correia of Portland, and Theresa and her husband James White of Westbrook; a sister, Patrica Sorenson of Westbrook; eight grandchildren, Jason and Maria Haskell of PA, Jennifer and Matthew Kilgallon of PA, Nathan Haskell and companion Heather Brady of Dedham, Luke Haskell and his companion Samantha Smith of San Diego, Hope Correia of Portland, Mathew and Ahlya White of Windham, Jonathan White of Westbrook, and Nicholas White of Westbrook; six great grandchildren, Tyler, Nathan, Alivia, Aidan, Stella, Ryder, Caleb, and Mila; several nieces and nephews. I’m so sorry to hear about Putt’s passing. I remember, among other things, him having a great sense of humor….like the time he nicknamed you “No Nuts” back in high school. The world has lost one of it’s better people.
