Claude Eric Guyot

claude guyot
Cumberland - Claude Eric Guyot, 68, of Range Road in Cumberland, passed peacefully on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Claude was born on November 30, 1948, in Couvet, Switzerland, to the late Marcel and Suzanne (Duvanel) Guyot. He graduated high school in Switzerland in 1964 and Watchmakers College in 1967. After college he served two years in the Swiss Armed Forces. Afterwards, Claude worked briefly as a watchmaker in Switzerland before coming to the United States to work and teach at the Waltham Watch Factory in Bridgeport, CT. It was there that he met the love of his life, Jill Benedict. In 1972, Claude and Jill moved to Maine, where he worked at Carter Brothers Jewelers on Congress Street. On July 12, 1975, Claude and Jill were married in North Yarmouth, Maine. Together they made their home and raised their family in Cumberland. In 1977, Claude and Jill opened Swiss Time on High Street in Portland, which operated there until 1994 when they moved to their current location on Exchange Street in Portland. When not working at the store, Claude enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, skiing, hockey, fishing, playing the guitar, and beekeeping. He loved to build things, including renovating two homes, knowing there was nothing he couldn't fix. He restored a 1969 MGB which Jill bought him for his 60th birthday. His greatest talent and passion was passing his knowledge on to his children and by his actions he ensured that his ethics and honesty were instilled in them. His greatest accomplishments in life were running a successful business for 40 years and raising his two children. His love of family always came first, which was never more evident than with the arrival of his first grandchild, Hunter, who stole his heart. With his great sense of humor, Claude loved cracking jokes, always with a twinkle in his eye as he thought of his next joke. His strength and determination were exemplified by coming to the US when he was 21, not knowing more than a few English words. His relentless ability to endure as a fighter was evident as he battled Parkinson's disease for more than 15 years and ALS for more than a year. Claude's final gift was the donation of his body for research towards a cure for ALS and Parkinson's disease. Claude was predeceased by a sister, Lucien Dubach and two brothers, Michel and Rene Guyot. He is survived by his wife of forty two years, Jill Guyot of Cumberland; his son, Kristopher and wife Meredith Guyot of Falmouth; his daughter Stephany and partner Michael Ramsay of Cumberland; his first grandchild, Hunter Claude Ramsay of Cumberland; a bonus son Edward and wife Julie Bennett and their children Katherine, Jessica, and Abby of Scarborough; two sisters, Joselyn Rossetti and Jacqueline Langenstein of Switzerland; two brothers, Francis and wife Leila Guyot of Switzerland, Freddy and wife Gaby Guyot of Switzerland; sister in law, Anne-Lise Guyot of Switzerland; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation and celebration of Claude's life will be held on the 69th anniversary of his birth, Thursday, November 30, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. 2. Claude was such a nice guy, I’ve known him for 40 years when he had a store on high street, always a gentleman. He really loved the business and sold the finest quality clocks & watches, but he loved his family even more. The best to Jill and the entire family at this difficult time, God Bless you all

    – Michael Tucci

  3. Claude you sold me my first high end Swiss watch. An Omega Seamaster Chronograph. Claude that’s a memory I can forget but what I can’t forget is every time I came into Swiss Time I saw the light in your eyes and the beaming of joy and kindness in your heart. That kind of love and kindness is something people will never forget about you. It was always a pleasure doing business with you over the years but it was more than an honor to know you and your family. One of the last times I saw you in Swiss Time when saying good bye I’m so glad that I told you I loved you because I did and I do. I will miss you my friend. Rest in peace.

  4. When called to forge Metro passes, you were always the best scofflaw in Paris. And you made bike riding and falling off your bike an art form.

When we meet insurmountable odds in our continying adventures, we say “What would Claude do?”

We miss you my friend. You left us much too soon.

  5. Jill, Steph and Kris (sorry to have not met you, Kris). Karen and I were so sad to learn the passing of such a great friend. When he would walk around the corner to come to our shop, it was always the brightest part of our day. Our visits to your shop, I can’t remember a time ever that Claude did not come out to see us. Many Christmases, many laughs, Claude and you all were such our “big brothers and sisters” on the block. Restez bien mon ami. Chacque couer que vous avez touches, sont entrape avec memoires jolie. Nous vous n’oublions pas. Claude would have corrected my grammar LOL; Our deepest sympathies to you all – Paul & Karen

  6. Claude was just as nice as he was talented. We started doing business with him when he was on High Street — and he was a favorite of ours. He dealt with his illness with courage and an unusually positive attitude! We read his obituary with surprise and sadness, for it always seemed to us that his spirit would conquer this dreaded disease.
We know that his business is in good hands, but we will sorely miss him.

  7. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Guyot. I frequent his shop on Exchange Street often – respecting an appreciation of his craft. If he was there, he would see me and give me a dignified nod. I was so pleased when I got the nod sometimes even in the parking garage elevator… My sincere condolences to your family and the employees at Swiss Time. Andrea Cesario and family.

    – ANDREA CESARIO

  8. Sad to hear of the loss of Claude who cheerfully and carefully repaired my watches since the 1970’s on High Street, Portland. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

    – Jack Milton

  9. I think I first met Claude in the early 80’s when he came to my early morning “adult fitness” class in the Greely gym. I also followed him from Swiss Time on High Street down to Exchange for the best watch repair and service. Whenever I was nearby on Exchange, I would stop in to catch up with Claude and Jill and I would feel happy the rest of the day. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences to Jill and the entire family. He will be so missed.

    – Cindy Andrews

  10. I am so sad to learn that Claude is no longer with us. I have known him since the early days on High Street and over the years my clocks and watches have benefited from his skillful attention. I will miss his presence and his ready smile. To his wife Jill, and all his family, I extend my sincere condolences.
