Florence Theresa Foley Green

PORTLAND - Florence Theresa Foley Green, 85, of Quebec Street, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Barron Center with her beloved sister and niece Pamela at her side. She was born in Portland on July 9, 1926, a daughter of Patrick J. and Mary Alice (Kane) Foley. She attended local schools and graduated from Cathedral High School. She married Joseph F. Green on April 24, 1950, at St Dominic's Church. They were happily married for 56 years. Florence worked as a retail clerk and department manager in the ladies fashion industry. She worked at Rines Department Store for 17 years where she was head of the hosiery department, and at A. H. Benoits for 28 years where she was the head of the ladies sportswear department. She retired in 1990. She had a lifelong interest in fashion and was always stylishly dressed. She was a longtime communicant of Sacret Heart and Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She loved to travel with her husband Joseph and they completed nine cruises together, often booking trips on ships chartered by unusual nations such as the former Soviet Union. She was a wonderful storyteller who filled her tales with humor. She often spoke of the good old days growing up in the West End, nights of dancing with her husband, lunches at the Village Caf(c) with her sisters and nieces, and fun-filled Friday shopping trips to Walmart and Hannafords with her special niece Pamela. She was a great lover of cats caring for as many as six at one time. She is predeceased by her husband who died July 16, 2006; and three sisters, Katherine J. Foley, Frances (Foley) Curran, and Evelyn G. Foley. She is survived by a sister, A. Helena (Foley) Jones of South Portland; a brother in law, John Green and his wife Janet of Enfield, Connecticut; a sister in law, Barbara Green Noyes of Chelmsford, Massachusetts; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and her beloved cat Terri. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Barron Center, Zolov Unit, for their professionalism and care provided to Florence. Visiting hours will be held 5:00 - 8:00 pm, Tuesday, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited 10:15 am, Wednesday, at the funeral home followed by an 11:00 am, Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
