Mrs. Edna M. Goan, 87, of South Portland, died Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Born in Portland on May 1, 1928, Edna was the daughter of the late John and Brigette (Lapiere) Bellefontaine. Her family moved her to South Portland when she was 3 years old. She graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1946. Edna married John Goan on April 21, 1956. Together, they built their home very close to where Edna grew up. Edna attended Northeastern Business College where she was educated in Accounting. During her working life Edna was employed with A P Tea Co., and Maine Savings Bank, retiring in 1992. Edna and John were active communicants of St. John/Holy Cross Parish where they were both very involved in numerous church organizations. She was also a volunteer of Good Cause Thrift Shop. Edna and John thoroughly enjoyed their lives together. Having both enjoyed music they played many musical duets together, and Edna belonged to the Hammond Organ Society. In addition, John and Edna enjoyed traveling, attending the theater, and hosting Christmas parties for over 30 years. Edna was an extremely kind hearted, genuine and faith filled person who enjoyed life to the fullest. She will be deeply missed by her husband John and everyone who knew her. Edna predeceased by her brother, Rev. John Bellefontaine; sister, Helena Hayden; and nephew, Thomas Black. She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, John Goan of South Portland; her nieces and nephews she adored, Richard Black and his wife Virginia of Cape Elizabeth, Carolyn Conley and husband William of South Portland; great-nieces and nephews, Stacey Conley, Sandra Roberts and husband Paul, Catherine Sirois and husband John, William Conley and wife Molly, Jennifer Conley, Lynn Foshay and husband Peter, David Black and wife Pamela, Michael Black and wife Kathleen, Susan Ray and husband James, Thomas Black, Jr. and wife Carol, and Damon Black and wife Kristin. She is also survived by several great-great nieces and nephews. Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-7PM at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday at 9:15AM followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 159 Black Point Rd., Scarborough. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.   1. Edna will be greatly missed. I was her and John’s tenant and neighbor for several years. We shared a love of God, cats, flowers and walking. God be with you, John, in your loss!

  2. My condolences to Edna’s family. I worked at Maine Savings Bank at the same time as Edna. She was a very empathetic and generous lady. She would take the bus to work and sometimes sit with my mother, Marjorie Jalbert. I will always think of Edna and her kindnesses with affection. She was a special person and I feel blessed to have known her.
