Cedric William Garton

PORTLAND - Cedric William Garton, 92, of Portland, died peacefully at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with his loving family by his side. He was born January 20, 1921 in Cambridge, MA, a son of Cedric H. and Ida Roach Garton. Cedric graduated from Deering High School in 1940. Following high school, he joined the Marine Corps in 1941. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and Washington, DC as a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps, and performed burial detail in Arlington National Cemetery. Cedric worked for Dun and Bradstreet for eight years. In 1953, he became the owner and operator of Eastern Musical Supply Company until 1974 when he sold the business. In 1975, he moved to Raymond and owned and operated the Rawhide Shoe Shop for ten years. He was past president of the Portland Rotary Club from 1973-1974. Cedric volunteered for Camp Sunshine, Casco, Maine from 1985-1995. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and especially spending time with his family. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Rosalie M. Garton in 1994 and a sister, Elaine Drinkwater. Surviving are: his wife Rosalie of 69 years; daughter, Patricia E. Heskett and her husband Stanley of Portland; son, Anthony C. Garton and wife Eileen Jennings of Falmouth; three grandchildren, Michael Sargent, Paula Henckel and her husband Peter, Julie Gallant; two great grandchildren, Benjamin and Maxwell Henckel and a nephew, A. William Drinkwater and his wife Kathy. Visiting will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A 6:30 p.m. memorial service will immediately follow at the South Portland Chapel. Burial will be at a later date.
