Portland - Margaret M. Foley, 101, died Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at the Barron Center. Born on July 20, 1914 to Peter and Margaret (Greeley) Foley, she was educated at St. Dominics school and was a 1932 graduate of Cathedral High School.Margaret lived on Brackett Street (West End) in the 2 family home her parents purchased back in 1923 through the age 97. Margaret worked 27 years for the Federal Government, including the Forest Service, the War Production Board and the Veterans Administration. In 1965, she started in the administration office at Mercy Hospital, retiring in 1980 as Executive Secretary to the Hospital Administrator. After retirement, Margaret was an active volunteer in the gift shop at Mercy Hospital on State Street, eventually becoming coordinator of volunteers at the gift shop. She also participated in many activities of the Mercy Auxiliary. In recognition of her volunteer service, she became the 3rd recipient of the Scanlon Award in 1998. Margaret was an active communicant of St. Dominic and St. Patrick churches. She was a member of the Mercy Auxiliary, the Irish American Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, a sister Elizabeth A. Foley, and brothers Martin J., William E. Hooker, and John F. Foley, and niece Margaret Sieben. She is survived by the following nieces and nephews; Elizabeth Slane of Gray, Sheila (William) Brown of Westbrook, Barbara (Thomas) Dunn of Worchester, MA, William (Patricia) Foley of Brunswick, Maureen King of South Portland, Mark (Betsey) Ross of South Portland, Peter (Marilyn) Foley of Framingham, MA, Richard (Lori) Foley of Tamarac, FL, John P. Foley, and Mary Elizabeth Foley of Portland, as well as many grand and great grand nieces and nephews, and cousin Helen (Griffin) Griffiths of Stony Point, NY. Margaret will be dearly missed by all whoknew her and remembered for her strong faith in God, love of family and friends, joy of life, and Irish wit. The family wishes to extend their thanks to all the staff at the Barron Center, and special thanks to the staff of section 3 South for the loving care given to Margaret over the past four years. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7PM on Monday, February 1, 2016, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 10:15AM Tuesday, February 2, 2016, at the funeral home, followed by an 11:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland.   4. My sincerest sympathies to Margaret’s family. I worked with Margaret during the early 70’s at Mercy when she was Executive Secretary in the Administrative Office of the CEO. She was a wonderful person, always upbeat with a story that would make you laugh. I have thought of her many times in the succeeding years.   11. Margaret was my next door neighbour a good portion of my life. She was just a lovely person, with a smile on her face and a wonderful personality. It is unfortunate that I will be out of state for her services, but please know she was very well liked by myself and the rest of my family. She will be sorely missed. God’s speed Margaret.
