South Portland Barbara Jean Barbie Collins, 84, died on Friday, May 06, 2016, at South Portland Nursing Home surrounded by her family. She was born in South Portland on September 20, 1931, a daughter of Willis Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Wetmore) Wass. She grew up in South Portland and attended Frank I. Brown Elementary School, and later graduating from South Portland High School in 1949 where she was an outstanding basketball and softball player. She married Francis Richard Collins on August 15, 1953. She was a loving wife and mother and raised her two children in South Portland. She enjoyed gardening, and walking the beach. Her grandchildren always cherished the stories she told them, whether in person or over the phone. She attended a breakfast club, where she chatted and enjoyed the company of her many friends and especially enjoyed trips to Scotland, Hawaii, and Connecticut. She is survived by her husband, Francis Richard Collins Sr.; a son, Francis Dick Collins Jr. and wife Donna of Waterboro; a daughter, Deborah Hambelton and husband Michael of South Portland; a brother, Donald K. Wass and wife Cindy of Limerick; grandchildren, Richard Collins and wife Libby, Amy Hambelton, Jason Webber and wife Christine, Jaime Griffin and husband Joseph; great-grandchildren, Jasmine and Kyle Webber, Hannah and Mason Collins, Samuel and Tiaylah Griffin. Visiting hours will be 11:00-1:00 pm, Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland followed by a 1:00 pm funeral service.
