CAPE ELIZABETH Mr. Leroy M. Chace, III, 78, died Thursday, October 1, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on June 17, 1937 in New Bedford, MA, Lee was the son of the late Leroy M. Chace, Jr. and Grace Hermione Bailey. Moving to Maine early in life, Lee graduated from Bridgton Academy, third in the Class of 1955. He attended the University of Maine at Orono before serving his country in the US Navy Seabees. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Lee served in the US Army Reserves for several years. Lee was employed with the Maine Department of Transportation for 39 years. During his career he served in many capacities, retiring as a Licensed Civil Engineer in the Traffic Department in 1997. After his retirement, Lee performed consulting work. Lee was always an active individual who worked tirelessly to serve others. A communicant of St. Bartholomews Church, Lee was a Past Grand Knight and Financial Secretary in 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and was a Past Faithful Navigator and comptroller in the 4th degree of Sebastian Rasle Council. Lee was a lifetime member in both 3rd and 4th degrees. As a continued commitment to his community, Lee served for over 25 years with Cape Elizabeth Fire-Police. In addition to his selfless service to his community, Lee was very active and involved in various capacities, including the Winthrop School Board, Cape Elizabeth Little League and in teaching religious education. He was a master at caning antique chairs, loved gardening, hunting and fishing, and excelled at woodworking. Having battled diabetes for over 50 years, Lee set a wonderful example of determination and will power. Above all else in life, Lee was a devoted and caring husband, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed. He was predeceased by his son, Leroy M. Zeke Chace, IV. Leroy is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Edna (Lynch) Chace of Cape Elizabeth; daughters, Deborah Turcotte and husband Len of Barrington, NH, Catherine LHeureux and husband Kevin of Kennebunk; sons, Mark Chace and wife Mary Anne of Whitefish, MT, Paul Chace and wife Karen of Durham; also survived by 8 grandchildren, Alex and Abby Turcotte, James and Emily LHeureux, Angelina, Gustavo, Lucia, and Alonzo Chace. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of VNA Hospice for the gentle and compassionate care they provided. Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-7PM at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the Funeral Home on Wednesday at 8:15AM followed by a 9AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bartholomew Church, 8 Two Lights Rd., Cape Elizabeth.
