Deloris Dot Carey

Deloris "Dot" Carey, 75, died Friday September 7, 2012 at Maine Medical Center. She was born November 27, 1936 in Portland, a daughter of Alphonso R. and Helen (Burton) Valley. Dot was the third of 19 children. She married the love of her life, Gene Carey, November 27, 1954 on her 18th birthday. They shared the next 58 years together in a wonderful, fulfilling life. Dot was a woman of strong will and passion. She faced the many challenges of life head on. She never feared hard work. In her younger days, Dot was renowned for her speed as a fish cutter on the Portland waterfront. Later, she turned a housecleaning hobby into a 20 employee operation, Sunshine Cleaners. Some of the other passions in Dot's life were her immediate and extensive family, travel, winters in Florida, collecting, and baseball. She loved watching her grandson John grow through the game and the Red Sox in the summer evenings. Deloris was predeceased by three sisters, Patty Saulle, Janice Anderson, and Joyce Dozois; and two brothers Alphonso Valley and George Lynds. Deloris is survived by her husband, Gene Carey; son, Gene Carey II and his wife Theresa (Vessey) Carey; grandson, John Carey of South Portland; two sister in laws, Evangeline Briggs of So. Portland and Rosalie Bergeron of Tempe, Az.. She is survived by eight sisters: Florence Tenney, Helena May Desilva, Janice Cakuss, Nancy Witham, Lois Davenport, Helena Early, Julia Dennison, and Clara Miner; five brothers: Bruce Valley, Elliot Valley, John Lynds, Roy Lynds, Les 'Andrew' Lynds. Visiting hours will be held 6:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, A funeral service will be held at the chapel, 11:00 am, Thursday, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Gene, I was so glad that I was able to see Dottie one last time at Dad’s birthday party on July 4th. I will never forget how patient you were while Dottie said her good-bye’s to everyone and kept you and Mabel waiting. She sure did love to talk. Will miss her very much. She and Gene touched our hearts and lives with so many special times and there generosity. You don’t come across many people in your lives that leave a lasting impression but Dot was one of them. She will truly be missed and loved forever.
