Cape Elizabeth - Margaret McCurdy Cook, 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family September 20, 2019, at her residence. Margaret was born in Lubec, Maine, on July 4, 1922, the daughter of Arthur and Evelyn (Creath) McCurdy.
Margaret migrated to Portland from Lubec, attending Saint Joesph's Academy and graduating at the top of her class. After graduating from Saint Joesph's, she attended University of Maine, Orono, receiving her Bachelor's degree in English in 1944. Shortly after graduation, she made her way to Boston to attend business school, eventually making her way back to Portland to work for a local TV station. It wasn't long after Margaret started at the TV station, she met her future husband Charles (Charlie) S. Cook II.
Charlie and Margaret were married August 28, 1948 and had five children together. Margaret took great pride in being a stay-at-home mom and housewife caring for her children and keeping up with daily tasks (minus the cooking).
Some of Margaret's secrets to longevity may have been attributed to her positive attitude, her notion to always put family first, staying social, her Monday bridge games (which she always needed to have her best outfits for) and being a devout Catholic.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased in life by her husband Charles S. Cook II, her sister Kate Warren and her brother Eugene McCurdy.
Margaret is survived by her daughters Margo Dutile and her husband Dan of Meredith, NH, Catherine Cook of Portland and Patty Cook of Portland; her sons Charles "Chuck" S. Cook III of North Conway, NH and Peter Cook and his wife Gail of Dewitt, MI; her grandchildren, Caitlyn Bierman, Liz (Elizabeth) Maillett, Molly Clark and Stephen Cook; her five great-grandchildren; her sisters, Marion Ross, Carolyn Ray and Irene Bryant; her brother, John P. McCurdy and numerous nieces, nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday September 27, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church 8 Two Lights Rd, Cape Elizabeth, ME, with a reception to follow. Immediately following the reception, interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery 672 Stevens Ave, Portland. A woman with a big heart and soul. She enjoyed life so and taught all who knew her how to be kind, caring and how to grow older gracefully! Loved all my time spent with her. I will smile when I think of her. Love to family and friends.
