December 15, 1924 ~ April 10, 2019

Resided in: Roque Bluffs, ME

Muriel Carolyn (Clemons) Watts (12/15/1924) passed peacefully on April 10th, 2019 with her very special nephew Danny Hatt by her side. The daughter of David P. Clemons and Elodi E. (Bagley) Clemons, Muriel was a born educator. Her varied teaching career encompassed everything from a one-room schoolhouse in Marshfield, Maine to a highly decorated and well respected career as a college professor at the University of Maine at Machias where she retired titled Associate Professor Emerita of Education. Muriel's teachings, her work with the PHI TAU PHI sorority and the countless extra curricular activities she was involved in wherever she was employed helped to positively shape many young lives. It was difficult to go anywhere with Muriel without someone recognizing her and thanking her for her efforts. Muriel devoted much of her career to helping shape the Maine educational process. Her influences at the town, county and state levels are felt to this day. Muriel loved children, boating, summers at Indian Lake, lobster feeds at "The Promised Land," and bluegrassing with her husband Philip Watts. Muriel is survived by her son, David, her daughter-in-law, Kate; her sister, Della Foster; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to convey a special thanks to nephew, Danny Hatt and niece, Elaine Foster for their personal and professional help while Muriel lived in Portland. We would also like to thank everyone at Avita of Stroudwater. The facility and staff were and are exceptional. A private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Muriel Watts was the BEST first grade teacher a kid could ever want. I remember her kindness and genuine desire for each student to grow into their full potential. Mrs. Watts was a terrific asset to the Campus School. She worked with other wonderful teachers: Marilyn Crandlemire, Virginia Cheney, Bill Robinson and my mother, Gloria Bodman. My heart goes out to her son David and is wife, Kate and to Danny Hatt and other extended family members. She was a fantastic person and the consummate educator! She will be missed!

  2. I am so very sorry to hear of Muriel’s passing. I frequently chatted with Muriel when visiting my father at Avita. She was a lovely and sweet lady. My thoughts and sympathies are with her family. May you find peace and comfort in the days ahead. Sincerely, Jessica Factor
