Portland - Nancy Tetrault, 66, of Clinton Street, passed away surrounded by family on March 3, 2021.
Born in River Edge, New Jersey on February 5, 1955, Nancy was the daughter of the late George and Barbara (Markham) McElwreath. She was raised in New Jersey and graduated from RiverDell High School in 1973 and shortly thereafter attended Boston College. During her time in Boston, she met James Tetrault. Little did either of them know, but that would be the beginning of a nearly 45-year marriage. Jimmy and Nancy were married on June 12, 1976 and began their family in Portland. Nancy taught parttime while her children were growing up, but eventually taught fulltime at Waynflete for 40 years, retiring in June of 2020.
Throughout her life, Nancy was an avid reader. There was little she enjoyed more than reading a good book on the beach. However, her whole life changed when her grandchildren came along. Nancy's whole life revolved around her grandchildren. Affectionately known as "Nanny", she was a very active and hands-on grandmother. There's nothing Nanny wouldn't do with her grandkids. From roller and ice skating, playing basketball or going on roller coasters, Nanny made sure she was able to be actively involved in the lives of Patrick, Emily and Geno, even if it meant getting a broken bone from time to time. She was fiercely loyal to her family. Nancy was also a fixture on the sidelines to any sporting event for her children or grandchildren, and the biggest cheerleader. She's even been known from time to time to question a call or two from a ref.
All in all, she was generous, kind hearted and helpful to anyone in need. She will be deeply missed by her husband, daughter, grandchildren, and anyone who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Nancy is predeceased by her son, James "Jimmy" Tetrault, Jr.; siblings, Kathy Gabetti and Terrance McElwreath; brother-in-lawn, John Tetrault.
She is survived by her beloved husband, James Tetrault of Portland; daughter, Megan Tetrault of South Portland; grandchildren, Patrick, Emily and Geno; daughter-in-law, Michelle. She is also survived by many extended relatives and friends, and her teaching team at Waynflete.
Visiting Hours celebrating Nancy's life will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 from 4-6PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 9:15AM followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. As a colleague, Mrs. T. was in a category by herself. Her dedication to her students, steady presence and her endless good humor was incredibly inspiring for those of us lucky enough to work alongside her day in and out. She had a big impact on many of us and will never be forgotten.

Nancy was such a wonderful, amazing and welcoming person. She would welcome any and all into her home and treated you like you were a part of her family, which made you feel like one. She was one of the warmest and kindest souls I’ve ever met in my life and I’ve known her for 30 years. She will be greatly missed by all and the world is certainly worse off for not having her in it anymore. My love and heart goes out to her family but at least she’s back with the members of her family that have gone before her. Say hi to Jimmy and Johnny for me, Mac! Love you! Paul

Mrs Tetrault was my K-1 teacher and remains one of my favorite teachers of my lifetime. I loved her stories about her dog Diesel. Thankful to have the opportunity to reflect on those times and thinking of Mrs T’s family.

Mrs. T was my son, Sam’s, teacher two years ago. She was wonderful with him. Whenever he felt nervous at drop off, she’d hold his hand. It meant so much to him (and me). Thank you for sharing her. All my best to your family.
