Portland- William Burrill Williamson II, “Bill”, 74, passed away on June 3, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer; he was surrounded by loved ones. Bill was born on August 16, 1949, in Augusta, son of the late Joseph Williamson and Mary Annis (Marston) Haskell.
Bill was dedicated to improving the lives of Mainers and welcoming others to experience the place he so proudly called home. He attended Augusta schools, Phillips Academy (1967), and Colby College (1971). Upon graduation, Bill worked as an English teacher and school administrator before entering the world of commercial banking. He went on to lead a 40-year career partnering with his clients and community organizations to realize their aims. He served on many non-profit boards and took great pride in his involvement with the community. Bill retired in 2023 as the State President for Bank of America.
Bill was devoted to his family; he helped raise three daughters, whom he loved deeply and shared every triumph and trial. He delighted in hearing his grandchildren lovingly refer to him as “Pappy” and was quick to shed tears of joy at moments big and small. His family will forever revere him for his humility, brilliantly pragmatic approach to life, and his unending gratitude for the people around him.
Bill is predeceased by his brother, Joseph Williamson; nephew, Kevin Williamson; and the mother of Lily and Rani, Carla Johnson. He is survived by his daughters, Lily and her husband Marc Cappelletti, Rani and her husband Mike Wilson, and Charlotte Williamson; grandchildren, Anna and Maeve Cappelletti, Finley Michelson, Sam and Levi Wilson; brother, David and wife Jeanne Williamson; cousin, Anne Sanders; and the mother of Charlotte, Martha Elbaum.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to The Cedars, whose staff cared for Bill with kind compassion, and to Maine Medical Center, whose care was especially appreciated by Bill.
A memorial service will be held at 4pm on June 19, 2024, with a reception to follow until 6:30pm at the Portland Country Club, 11 Foreside Rd, Falmouth.

So sorry to lose a wonderful childhood friend who did so much with his life. I grew up in Augusta with Bill. We went to nursery school together, We played little league and pee wee basketball together. Actually, he was the only guy in the league who actually dunked a ball during a game. That is seared in my memory. We saw each other off and on over later years–he always had that big smile and always made everyone else feel like THEY were the most important person in the room. I attended the memorial service today and was SO impressed with you three wonderful daughters. To Lily, Rani, and Charlotte–you three were amazing in your tribute to your dad. I know he was present in that room and was so proud of you and who you have become. Like the last line says in my favorite movie, It’s a Wonderful Life”, you dad was the richest man in town. I wish you peace and many happy memories. Roger Katz
