In Loving Memory of William "Bill" Daniel Howard
June 4, 1937 – January 2, 2024
William Daniel Howard, known affectionately as Bill, passed away on January 2, 2024, at the age of 86. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on June 4, 1937, Bill led a life rich in family, work, and simple joys.
A devoted father, Bill took pride in being the father of his late son, John Howard, and daughter, Melinda Howard. Bill was married for 35 years to Rebecca Howard, whom he met at a dance, creating a partnership filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Patricia Howard, his first wife and the mother of his children, preceded him in death.
Bill's professional journey included serving the Navy as a tool cutter and grinder, overcoming claustrophobia to ensure the submarines he worked on were safe and well made. He was proud to serve for six years from 1956 to 1961; one key moment he remembered as a Navy Veteran was his ship being in Cuba when the regime change happened. For 35 years, he continued his dedicated service to the U.S. government at various naval shipyards, contributing his skills to places like the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, Georgia.
Education was a priority for Bill, as he attended night school at Lowell University, MA, earning his BA; a source of immense pride for him. His love for learning extended to completing courses at Lowell Tech.
Outside of work, Bill had a passion for trading stocks and managing investments, showcasing his financial acumen. He enjoyed making the holidays memorable for his children, instilling in them the importance of celebration and joy.
Bill was an avid bargain hunter, never one to turn down a good deal. His love for camping and fishing created cherished memories with his children during their formative years.
Together with his wife, Rebecca, Bill found joy in sightseeing and travel, exploring destinations like Lake George, St. Augustine, Daytona, and the Amelia Islands. He was a loving and caring partner, always ensuring Rebecca felt cherished.
His granddaughter, Mira Strout, held a special place in Bill's heart, and he delighted in spending time with her, always sharing a special smile.
William Daniel Howard is survived by his wife Rebecca Howard, his daughter Melinda Howard, his stepson Chris Strout, and his granddaughter Mira Strout. In honoring his memory, let us reflect on the simple pleasures, strong family bonds, and enduring love that defined Bill's life. May he rest in peace.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of Portland.

Uncle Bill was always a quiet fellow. In my youth I never knew what he was thinking. I do reme.ber he was always bringing in smelts for Gram to fry up and animals he had trapped. When he went in the Navy I was a teenager and really lost touch after we moved away. In recent years we reached out and reconnected. I’m sad that we missed out on making more memories. Rest in peace Uncle Bill.
To his family, I am sorry for your loss. May he rest in eternal peace.
Rebecca,
Sending thoughts and prayers to you and your family. I will miss William in the dining room. He was funny, called me “kid” when I’d give him his coffee.
