Scarborough, Maine
Karin (Martinson) Rooks, 80, of Scarborough, ME, died of natural causes on July 21, 2023. Born in Urbana, Illinois, Karin spent her childhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Brantford, Ontario. She graduated from Nicolet High School and the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor’s degree in education. It was at U-Wisconsin that she met the love of her life, Robert Rooks, at a Friday night “beer supper.” They were married before their senior year.
With Bob at her side, Karin lived a life full of friends and adventures. Following Bob’s career as a pilot – first in the Air Force, then with Delta Air Lines – the young couple lived in Texas, California, Illinois, and then Dunwoody, Georgia, where they raised their children. They fell in love with Maine and moved to Camden in the 1986, where they were actively involved in the local community. After Bob’s death in 2010, Karin relocated to southern Maine to be near two of her grandchildren.
Karin’s first job was as a third-grade teacher in Del Rio, TX. She remembered her students vividly for the rest of her life. Once her children were born, she was an active and engaged mom, with many talents – Girl Scout troop leader, Sunday School teacher, accomplished seamstress, terrific scratch cook (who threw memorable dinner parties!), and substitute teacher. Later, Karin turned to a new career as a realtor in Atlanta and then Camden.
Karin treasured the friends she made throughout her life and kept in touch with many for decades. She loved a good book, sailing Penobscot Bay, playing Mahjong or bridge with friends, traveling, and keeping up with current events.
She is survived by her sister, Mary DuFresne; daughter, Jennifer Rooks and husband, Mike Moran; son, Rob Rooks and wife, Trish Rooks; and her beloved grandchildren, Sam, Julia, and Henry.
A celebration of Karin’s life will be held at the Camden Yacht Club on September 16, from 5:00-7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, PO Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211-1807, or to Maine Needs, www.maineneeds.org. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME
Karin’s sudden death came shortly after we had enjoyed a great conversation in person after our covid enforced lack of contact except in email. We were both at a wonderful concert offered by our friend Mihae Lee at Piper Shores, Karen on her red scooter that she thoroughly enjoyed. Of course I feel deprived of being able to continue our ongoing commiserations over several years, we always could pick up where we left off. She knew I wished I had gone to the U of Wisconsin also:)
The photo of Karin captures her beautifully. Witty, smart, full of vinegar as they say. I loved spending time with her and hearing her well told stories. Admired all her talent as a smart woman who also “sewed” clever things like zebra print fabric for decorating upstairs after that trip with grandkids to Africa. so much more, but you all know what Im describing:)She was so proud of her family and missed Bob so deeply, I understood that too. She was so honest and caring. Ill always miss her and miss the chance for more time together as will so many others.
bookends of knowing her she would enjoy: From the Halloween snow storm of 2011 to the irony of Hurricane Lee hitting Maine today, the day of her memorial celebration in Camden 9-16-23. I can hear her giggling.
We became neighbors when she moved here from Camden. We shared book discussions and delightful conversations and I learned to know her family through Karin’s eyes. I feel as if I know each of you in special ways from her clever reflections. You all know what I am describing all too well.
Jennifer Mike and Sam and Julia, I was sad to hear of your moms passing. So sorry for her. And gram. Take care. Call me. Kristen Tully
So sorry to hear of Karin’s passing. I played mah jong with her for many years. She was a delightful person and was very proud of her family. Prayers for all of her family.
