Portland- Floyd W. Porter, 71, of Stevens Avenue died peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Mercy Hospital, surrounded by love. Floyd was born on November 18, 1951 in Webster, MA the son of Floyd L. and Patricia A. (Wakefield) Porter. He grew up and lived most of his life in the greater Portland area. Floyd was a very hard worker that took great pride in being in control of, and managing his own life. As young man he would walk up and down St. John Street, washing windows for businesses in that area in order to have income, he was not afraid of work. He took a great deal of pride in surrounding himself with people who not only cared deeply about him, but that he knew he could trust. Through his hard work and dedication he was able to live in his own home. He spent the last 10+ years working at Susan’s Fish & Chips on Forest Avenue. He would wash dishes, clean, do whatever was asked of him, he especially loved socializing with the customers that would come in to the restaurant, everyone knew Floyd. He had many friends at his Cumberland Farms stop and his stop at Paul’s Service Center. He will be missed by many. A special thank you is extended to Susie at Susan’s Fish & Chips for all of the kindness she showed to Floyd over the years. Floyd was predeceased by his father, Floyd L. Porter. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Porter of Biddeford; a brother, Kevin Porter of Biddeford; special friends, Shaun and Linda Curran of Portland and Charles Gendron of Portland. Floyd will be interred with his father in the family lot in Houlton, Maine. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Floyd, Susan and myself went to Foxwoods for a weekend! We had so much fun that we stayed an extra night! Got a big suit and enjoyed the trip! I will never forget my time spent with him!!! ❤️

  2. Rest in peace, Floyd. Your obituary is a lovely tribute to you! May your family and friends take comfort in the memories they share with you.

  3. I’m sorry we weren’t as close as we should have been. I’m sorry I wasn’t around to see you often. Rest in paradise, Uncle Wakey. You’re among some greats up there.

  4. I grew up spending summers in Portland, camping in my Uncle’s yard. Once, when visiting the area, without the camper, we needed a place to stay over a holiday weekend. Little Floyd took us in. My boyfriend who was with us, didn’t know the love of CBing that Floyd had. Not to mention his obsession of cleaning. He washed the floors all night and in between washes, talked on the CB…. ALL NIGHT. My bf was freaked out and we laughed about it years later but he and Floyd didn’t sleep.

  5. I have memories growing up with my dad and my uncle Wakey, memories that would make any young girls heart happy to feel so loved. I will forever be your Harvey, and I know there will be plenty of open arms waiting for you upon your arrival. Rest with the angels, be young and free Uncle. <3

  6. He was a genuine person…extremely kind and generous…a hard worker…always there when you needed him with a smile!

  7. One time I was busy with Aux and Jonny and Floyd had to make blueberry sauce for a dinner to go on ice cream for the National VFW Aux President…both had been inbibing a few adult beverages and I had no idea what they would end up with…but it was delicious!

  8. I have known Floyd for years of going to Susan’s Fish n Chips and from the VFW. He always ready to help..full of fun..and ine of the sweetest men I have ever known.

  9. I’ll miss having our little chats whenever I stop in to the VFW, or Susan’s for my seafood fix. May you rest in peace 💜 🙏 My condolences to the family.
