Carroll Lee Fernald, II

November 25, 1973 ~ June 10, 2023
Resided in:
Portland, Maine
Portland - Lee Fernald, a charismatic and easygoing man, passed away on June 9, 2023 after a ten-month battle with cancer. Born on November 25, 1973, in Portland, Maine, Lee was a lifelong resident of the city he cherished. As a graduate of Portland High School, class of 1992, he also studied automotive repair at Portland Arts and Technology High School. Lee continued his automotive mastery and his natural talent for fixing things throughout his life. Unlike many, Lee’s life was rarely consumed with work, but with what really matters instead, family and friends.
His love of classic muscle cars started in his teen years with a beautiful yellow Cutlass, later maintaining and enjoying rides in his two different Camaros and a Firebird. Lee was an avid animal lover, he spent countless hours caring for his dogs and assisting his close friend, Megan Reinhold, with her horses. Lee enjoyed the thrill of poker with family and friends and frequent trips to the casino. Other hobbies included RC cars, darts, and bowling. He appreciated time with his family and loved being an uncle, and was often found playing basketball with his nieces and nephews at family gatherings. His gift to gab, good sense of humor, and charming nature made him connect with almost everyone he met. As Mark Twain once wrote, "Humor is mankind's greatest blessing," and Lee's laughter was a gift to all who knew him. Lee was so kind and responsive to everyone, unless you were his boss. Lee lived on his terms, and endeavored to help those around him. His ability to understand where you were at was astounding. We miss him so much already!
Lee is survived by his father, Carroll Fernald; his mother, Sue Fernald; his sister, Michelle Hawkes; his brother-in-law, Stephen Hawkes; their children James, Hannah, Madeline, and Flynn; and his close friend, Megan Reinhold.
Family, friends, and all who knew Lee, are invited to gather for visiting hours on Friday, June 16, 2023, from 4:00-7:00 pm at Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, located at 172 State Street, Portland, Maine, 04101. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 1:30 pm at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
We encourage everyone to share their memories and upload photos of Lee to the memorial page, as we celebrate the life of a truly remarkable man. May his spirit live on through the stories we share and the laughter we remember.

Whenever Lee comes up in conversation, the words I use to describe him are things like, sweet, easy going, chill, and kind hearted. From my many years of knowing him, that hasn’t changed a bit. I’m sad I didn’t get a chance to spend more time with him later in life. There is warm love in my heart toward him in the fond memories I look back on. I’ll never forget.
I met Lee as a young child when I moved to Spruce St. where him and his family resided. I was around 6-7 when we met and he was the first friend I made in that neighborhood.
Lee was always quick to help others. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Best of friends, closest confidant,
Too good for this life
Sitting by the fire and just talking. He was very easy to talk to.
With his laughter, good conversation, and generosity.
I met Lee 13 years ago at a pool hall while enjoying time with friends. He was the best dart player I had ever seen.
Lee was one of the greatest people I’ve ever had the privilege to know. It was an honor to call him my friend. Warmest regards, Randy Nadeau
