Portland Mary Johonnett Pooler Price, 84, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts on September 1, 1932, Mary was the daughter of the late Elton and Claire (Hayden) Johonnett. Mary graduated from North Western University and in the 1950s she worked as a social worker in Chicago with foster children. Moving back to Portland, Mary worked closely with her husband for over 20 years in the family business that her father started, Johonnetts Restaurant and Kitchen Equipment on Exchange Street. Mary married Walter J. Pooler on Thanksgiving Day in 1952. Together, they shared 49 years of marriage and raised 3 children in Portlands West End neighborhood. Following the death of her husband, Mary married E. Clifton Price. Mary and Clif spent the next 13 years together until he passed away in 2015. Mary was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Prior to her involvement at the Cathedral, Mary spent many years as a communicant of the former St. Dominics Church. Her deep faith was a motivating factor for her volunteer work in Lourdes and Calcutta. A woman with a generous and giving heart, Mary also volunteered for several local organizations. She spent time with Hospice patients and their families, served soup to those in need at St. Vincent de Paul, offered walking tours for historic Portland land marks, volunteered at Catherine McCauley Second Hand Store, donated countless hours to the United Way, and was involved in the Maine Cerebral Palsy Association (now known as the Morrison Center). In addition she volunteered her time as a ships greeter in Portland, the Portland Observatory and in the Portland Schools as her children were growing up. Mary had a love for travel with both Walter and Clif. She traveled to every state in the country, along with her visiting most of Europe, Antarctic, India, Nepal, China and Russia. Above all else in life, Mary adored her family and enjoyed the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to Walter and Cliff, Mary is predeceased by her son Brian Pooler in 2005. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Pooler Prince and husband Sanford, IV of Gorham; son, Scott Pooler of Bath. Mary is also survived by her adored grandchildren, Tia Webb and her husband Carlton, Sanford Jack Prince V, Clark Prince, Jennifer Prince and Nick Pooler; 3 great-grandchildren, Eric, Avi and Aila Webb; step-daughter, Virginia Kathy Price of Standish; step-sons, Brad Price and partner Randy of FL, David Price and wife Laura of IL, and Bryan Price of CA; step-grandchildren, Lorien, Alexander and Kyle Price. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 11:30AM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland.
