Theodore Varney, Jr.

PORTLAND Mr. Theodore R. Varney Jr., 86, of Portland, died April 2, 2015 at his home. Born on September 3, 1928, the son of the late Theodore and Annie (Fogg) Varney. Theodore honorably served his country in the United States Air Force and in 1952 was recognized as having the 2nd highest GED score in the country. For over 60 years, Teds passion was country music. Tennessee Ted Varney was a founding member of the Melody Mountain Folk and a member of the Down East Country Music Association where he was a nominee for the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame. Ted was presented the DECMA Pioneer Award which he was very humble in receiving, along with several other nominations and country music awards. He is survived by his sons, James Varney and wife Cheryl of Deltona, FL, Edland Varney and wife Cindy of Alfred, and Kenneth Varney of Brunswick. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his longtime lady friend, Marjorie Hodgkins. Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 4:00-6:30PM at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland where a funeral service will take place at 6:30 PM. A procession will form at the Funeral Home on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 9:30AM with burial to follow at Biddeford City Cemetery where Military Honors will be rendered.
