Dorothy M. Barron

PORTLAND - Dorothy M. Barron, 95, of Portland, died January 21, 2014 at The Cedars. She was born May 14, 1918, in Portland, a daughter of William and Gertrude Keefe Halpin. Dorothy was educated locally and was a 1937 graduate of Portland High School. She grew up on Munjoy Hill in Portland. She worked for an insurance company as a secretary. She married Richard A. Barron on June 2, 1945 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Dorothy travelled extensive with her husband Richard, who was a Lt. Col. in the Air Force. She volunteered with the American Red Cross while she travelled with her husband as an Air Force wife. Dorothy was a communicant of St. Pius X Church. She was a Eucharistic Minister; volunteered at St. Joseph's Manor in the Pastoral Care Department and distributed Communion in homes. She was also a 30+ year volunteer with the Portland Public Schools at Lyseth School and the Religious Education Program at St. Pius X Church. In her leisure time, she became a Foster Grandparent; enjoyed bowling and playing Scrabble with family members. She was a member of the Wife's Clubs of military personnel. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Richard in 1990 and her sister Patricia McGeough in 2009. Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Shane Ellis of Maryland, Joseph McGeough, Michael McGeough of Portland, William McGeough of Portland, Eddie Connolly of FL, Richard Connolly of Portland and Janet Gervais and her husband Gary of Portland and many great nieces and great nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at The Cedars for the care that Dorothy received. Visiting hours will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, January 24th at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home, followed by a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.Online condolences may be expressed below.








Dot was the most wonderful volunteer at Lyseth School in Portland. She touched the lives of many children with her kind, gentle manner. Everyone knew it must be Friday when Dot walked through the door. May she now be enjoying the rewards of heaven. Blessings to all of her family.
