POTRLAND - Lloyd G. Davies, M.D., 95, of Portland, died peacefully, December 21, 2013, at his residence. He was born August 29, 1918, in Oneco, Connecticut, a son of George W. and Edith Underwood Davies. He attended local schools and graduated from Plainfield High School. Lloyd attended the University of Vermont, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree and went on to the Medical College graduating in 1943 with a Doctor of Medicine Degree. In November, 1942, he married Jeane Palmer of Westborough, MA prior to graduation. After his residencies at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and at Worcester City Hospital in Worcester, MA, Lloyd entered military service joining the U. S. Army Medical Corps as a 1st Lieutenant. He served in the American and European Theatres of Operation, which included Holland, Belgium, France and Germany from 1943 to June 1946. He was discharged as a Major, US Army Medical Corps. Following the service, Dr. Davies moved to Fryeburg and established a solo Family Practice. During this time, he joined and became active in the American Academy of Family Physicians, a national organization of family doctors. He became President of the Maine Chapter. Later he was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Academy. In 1969, following a three year term on the Board of Directors, Dr. Davies was elected Vice-President of the Academy. At the conclusion of his term and seeking a more moderate workload, he relocated to Cape Elizabeth and practiced there for fifteen years, retiring in 1985. Dr. Davies was a member of the medical staff in the North Conway, NH and Bridgton Hospitals in the early years. In the Portland area he was a member of the medical staff at the Barron Center, Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center. He was a member of the Cumberland County Medical Society, Maine Medical Association, American Medical Association and a Charter member of the Academy of Family Physicians. In addition to the practice of medicine, Dr. Davies enjoyed several hobbies. Among these was a love of travel. He visited Europe on several occasions and also traveled to Mexico, South America and various parts of the United States. He also enjoyed downhill skiing. Over a forty-five year period, he maintained a medium sized sailboat for summer recreation. During the sailing season, he and Mrs. Davies went sailed Downeast as often as possible. Dr. Davies was also a life member of the Masonic Lodge (Pythagorean No. 11 AF AM) in Fryeburg and a member of the Congregational Church there. Dr. Davies was predeceased by his wife Jeane in 2001, a sister and a brother. He is survived by daughters, Kimberly Pierce of Tavares, Florida, Suzanne Bergeron and her husband Daniel of St. Albans, ME; one granddaughter; three grandsons; seven great grandsons and one great granddaughter. Services will be private with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth. Grandfather meant a lot to me. He accomplished a lot in his life. He was a good father figure for me growing up. I’m going to miss him.
