Alice Marie Burdwood
SCARBOROUGH - Alice Marie Burdwood, 91, of Scarborough, passed away on May 2, 2013 at Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Palmyra, Nebraska, a daughter of August and Margaret (Rehm) Helms. In 1946, she married the love of her life, Howard A. Burdwood while he was serving in the U. S. Air Force in Lincoln, Nebraska during WWII. Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Maine. During their 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration, Alice reminisced that she was a long way from home, as many war brides were during the 40's. Maine was her adopted home for half a century. Alice devoted her life to supporting her husband and raising their four children. She was a wonderful wife and mom. She spent her summers with family at a camp they built in Jackman, Maine; known as "Alice and Howard's Haven". Following retirement, she enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii and spending time with Howard and her family. She enjoyed mystery bus tours, going to garage sales with friends; she was a member of the Scarborough Senior Citizen's and enjoyed working in her flower gardens. Alice will be remembered as a sweet, delightful person. Alice was predeceased by her parents; her husband Howard in December, 1998; and a son, Bruce Burdwood in 1992. Surviving are three daughters, Cheryl Leeman of Portland, Arlene Higgins and her husband Rick of Scarborough, Carrie Brady and her husband Dick of Scarborough; a sister, Irene Hansen of Ceresco, NE; grandchildren, Aaron and Alicia Leeman, Kristen and Matt Brady, Bruce and Brandon Burdwood, and three great grandchildren, Olivia Brady, Bruce Burdwood and Brent Burdwood. Those desiring may make donations in Alice's memory may be made to: Animal Refuge League, 449 Stroudwater Street, Westbrook, Maine 04092. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a 1:00 p.m. graveside service on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Scarborough Memorial Cemetery, Old Blue Point Road, Scarborough. Arrangements by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Online condolences may be expressed below.
