Thomas Patrick Kenny

PORTLAND - Thomas Patrick Kenny, 81, of Back Cove Estates, died suddenly on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Maine Medical Center. He was born in New York City on September 30, 1931, son of John and Bridget Walsh Kenny. He was educated in New York, attending Our Lady of Good Counsel School and was a 1949 graduate of Commerce High School in Manhattan. He married his high school sweetheart, Alice Mary McElroy, on March 1, 1949, at St. Catherine of Siena Church in New York City. After living in the Bronx for several years, they moved to Queens Village, NY, and then to West Sayville, NY, where they raised five children. Thomas was employed by the New York City Police Department for thirty years, retiring as a Police Captain in 1985. Although he was assigned to a variety of precincts throughout his career, he also spent many years working in the Central Records Division at One Police Plaza in Manhattan. Thomas had a wide range of interests and hobbies, including cooking, reading, listening to music, watching movies, and attending theater performances. He particularly enjoyed being near the water and was an avid swimmer and sailor. After he retired, Thomas divided his time between a home in Ponce Inlet, FL, and one on Clemons Pond in Hiram, ME, where he spent many happy hours with his children and grandchildren. He moved to Portland in 2008. Married for over 63 years, he was predeceased by his wife, Alice, on December 30, 2012. Thomas is survived by three daughters, Alice Susan Lawson and husband Michael of East Walpole, Massachusetts, Ellen Kenny and husband John Acconzo of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and Laura Kenny and husband Pierre de Laforcade of Montclair, New Jersey; two sons, Thomas Kenny and wife Susan of Portland, and Mark Kenny and wife Gina of Portland; a sister, Mary Burke of Miami, FL; a brother, John Kenny of East Islip, NY; nine grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hiram at 2:00 pm, May 25, 2013. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland.
