January 18, 1921 ~ November 12, 2012

PORTLAND-Louise Brooks Christy, 91, of Portland died Monday November 12, 2012 at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth. She was born in Brunswick on January 18, 1921, a daughter of Fred and Edna Brooks. Louise attended local schools and was a graduate of Brunswick High School. She graduated from the Maine General School of Nursing in 1941. Louise joined the U.S. Army and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1942 and was ordered to Calcutta, India to serve in the often forgotten Indo-China-Burma Theater of World War II. Louise was stationed in a field hospital, treating injured Allied airman and soldiers who were fighting the Japanese in Burma. After the war Louise returned home to Portland and married Robert Christy. Louise worked at the Maine Medical Center for over 40 years in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Louise was always an avid reader and after her retirement she began painting and needlepoint. She became quite skilled at both, winning numerous first place prizes at local county fairs. She took many classes to improve her artistic talents. Her beautiful, Maine inspired artwork adorns the walls of her children's and grandchildren's homes. Louise and her husband Bob loved to watch sports and they always traveled to the games of their six grandsons. The magnitude of the game did not matter, Little League, or high school; they were always on the sidelines, cheering on their grandsons. Her husband Bob died in 1998 and Louise moved in with her daughter Ann. Still independent, she was snow blowing her driveway until a knee injury put an end to that at age 88. Louise would get upset when a well-intentioned neighbor would try to do her snow blowing for her because she was "old". Louise was predeceased by her husband Robert Christy of 52 years, a brother Fred Brooks. Two daughters, Ann Christy, Robyn Derrig and her husband Michael; six grandchildren, Jeremy Arsenault and his wife Lisa, Aaron Arsenault and his wife Beth, Anthony Derrig and his wife Libby, Nicholas Derrig and his wife Amy, Scott Derrig and his wife Jennifer and Keith Derrig; nine great grandchildren; sister Evelyn Carmody. The family would like to acknowledge the staff at Sedgewood Commons of Falmouth for their compassion during Louise's time with them. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday 4 to 7 p.m. November 13, 2012 at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Wednesday a 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held at the funeral home followed by burial in Brooklawn Cemetery, Portland.Online condolences may be expressed below.

Guestbook

  1. I too met Louise at Pat Riley’s. What fun she was!! I always admired her spunk and feisty attitude! She came to my farm with Pat years ago went riding with me on a 4 wheeler–she laughed like a kid! I’ll hold her memory close.

  2. To the family members of Louise, Louise and I met at Pat Riley’s art studio. We had hours of painting, laughter and just good times together. She holds a very close place in my heart and I am blessed to be given her paint brushes. I will use them with her energy flowing through my hands. I will miss her greatly but know she is painting with Pat in heaven.
