The beginning of a new year and a new decade is a time when many people think about getting organized and taking care of important matters. In 2021, we recommend that you include funeral preplanning on the list of important matters to take care of.
Funeral services can be an upsetting and emotional topic for many people, so it is often avoided and important decisions are delayed. While it is certainly understandable that funeral planning is not something people want to think about, it is still an important one to address in advance. Preplanning gives you the time to consider options and make important decisions, ensuring your wishes are carried out, while also helping ease the burden of your loved ones during an already difficult time.
We often get asked if preplanning “locks” you into anything. It doesn’t; should you move away from the local area, we can transfer your plan to any funeral home in the United States. Preplanning is about giving you and your family peace of mind; we are here to help you with that.
Though you and your loved ones may know that you want a particular religious service or whether you prefer burial or cremation, it helps to have these decisions in writing. With each of these decisions also come numerous other details. Music selections, flowers, if you’d like donations in your name directed somewhere specific, for example. All of these details are important to give thought to in advance. Doing so helps ensure that your end-of-life services reflect how you would like to be remembered. By preplanning, you ensure that you have the time to think through the details, as there are some decisions you may not even be aware need to be made.
As your loved ones are grieving, their energy should be put towards remembrance and healing. With all - or most - decisions about funeral services made in advance, and put down in writing, the logistical and decision-making working won’t be put on their shoulders during an already difficult time. Even if you’ve had discussions about funeral services, it’s important to have them documented. Documenting your wishes gives your loved ones something to reference, rather than having to wonder if they are making the right choices. Having decisions made and written down in advance, even just some of them, can provide certainty and comfort at a time when it’s most needed.
