Marguerite June Steele Nelson Obituary (1927

SCARBOROUGH - Marguerite June Steele Nelson, 85, of Scarborough, died Saturday February 23, 2013 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was born on June 8, 1927 a daughter of William H. Steele and Mary J. Gorrivan in Portland, Maine. Margarite attended Portland Schools. As a young girl worked in the kitchen at Queen's Hospital now known as Mercy Hospital. During World War II she worked in the South Portland Shipyard. She also worked at Eisman's Twine Factory. In 1979 she retired from Osteopathic Hospital. Marguerite was very active in the Scarborough Senior Citizens, starting in 1984. She was instrumental in organizing the Senior Trips through Scarborough Community Services. Marguerite was President for several years. She was also a member of the Nonesuch Senior Citizens and the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. She loved to travel and went on many trips with her friends. In March of 2002, she was recognized by the Department of Human Services for her volunteering for the Older Americans Act and Nutrition Program. She liked to tell people that she was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels for over 20 years; and then she became a recipient of them. She stayed active with the Senior Citizens up until the very end having had lunch with them a few days ago. Maggie as she was known as by her friends always had a story to tell from her past and always ready to brighten everyone's day. She was also ready for whatever came along. Maggie celebrated every holiday to the limit, including her Easter Bonnets and dressing up for Halloween every year. She always wore matching beads and earrings every day. She was called Grammie with the beads. You rarely heard anything negative from her. Even with her limited vision she enjoyed the Red Sox games and NASCAR. She always looked on the bright side and said that God only gave you what you could handle. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life, she attended sports events and the many activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandson. She was very proud of their accomplishments and was quick to tell all of her friends about them. She supported them in everything they did. Maggie had a very limited academic education but was very educated in the ways of life. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Marion Thomas and Jane Cornish, son Henry E. Nelson, III. Survivor include her daughter, Beverly and Carl Dahms, Scarborough, son, George and Tracey Nelson, Huntersville, NC and her grandchildren Terrence and Christine Merrill, Saco, Amanda and Adam Nelson, Huntersville, NC and her great-grandson, Matthew Merrill. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren, Sherry Frost, Carl Dahms, Jr., and Heidi Dahms, step-great grandchildren Ashli Frost, Kapriece Dahms and step-great-great granddaughter Teagan McGovern. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation for all of the care from the staff at Pine Point Center, Gosnell House and her special bus driver, Lloyd Cushing. Visitation will be held Tuesday 4:00pm - 7:00pm at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Wednesday an 11:00 a.m. funeral service will be held at the chapel. Burial will be in the South Gorham Cemetery in the spring.
