South Portland- John W. Elwell, 82, of McKinley St. died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. His loving daughters were by his side. John was born in Portland, Maine on October 20, 1932 the son of William W. and Ina Bonney Turk Elwell. John enlisted and served in the United States Army. John married Jeannette Rutter in 1962, together they made their home and raised their family in South Portland. John worked for Cushman Bakery for 15 years before accepting a job with Hannaford Bros. as a Warehouse Supervisor, retiring in 1992 after more than 28 years of service. He was a life member of the South Portland VFW Post #832 and a member of the Eagles Club. In his spare time John enjoyed playing golf, bowling, playing cards with friends and darts. John was predeceased by his wife of 30 years in 1992; 16 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughters Lori Baxter of Portland, Lynn and Dan Kelleher of Scarborough, Julie Elwell of Washington, DC and Pamela Garland of Biddeford; 5 grandchildren Michelle Ingrisano, Chris Dow, Natasha and Hayley Baxter and Evan Kelleher; 5 great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 10:00am at Woodlawn Cemetery, Stroudwater Street, Westbrook.
