SCARBOROUGH - Jerome Cedric Simpson, 80, of Scarborough, died July 31, 2013 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with his loving family by his side. He was born June 14, 1933 in Lewiston, Maine, a son of Cedric and Florence (Day) Simpson. Jerry graduated from Deering High School in 1951 and was well known locally for his athletic career. He attended the University of New Hampshire. Jerry served in the air force overseas in Tripoli and Libya. Jerry married Joan Hope Atwood in 1956 and began raising a family. A dedicated husband and father, he lived by example, the belief of family first. He was a long time member of the South Portland Lions Club, served on the South Portland City Council, and volunteered as a Little League and football coach in South Portland. He enjoyed fishing, attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events, and was an avid reader. Jerry was a salesman for Consolidated Freightways and retired after 30 years in the industry. He is survived by his wife, Joan of Scarborough; a daughter, Lisa D Effler of South Portland; two sons, Robert M Simpson and his wife Anne of Auburn, Stephen C Simpson and his wife Lisa of South Portland; two sisters, Diane Perry of Florida, Marilyn Hight and her husband Bob of Portland; two brothers, Robert Simpson and his wife Marilyn of Florida; Michael and his wife Cathy of South Carolina; five grandchildren, Matthew Simpson, Lauren Simpson, Stephen Simpson, Cassandra Rich, Mason Rich; and one great-grandson, Mason Simpson. Visiting hours will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, followed by a 3:00 p.m. memorial service at the chapel.
