PORTLAND - James M. "Chickie" McCartney, 85, of Portland, died April 20, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on November 7, 1928 in Portland a son of James J. and Mary Fox McCartney."Chickie" attended parochial schools and was a 1946 graduate of Cheverus High School. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, he worked briefly at the Portsmouth Shipyard. He later accepted a position as a letter carrier with the Post Office, retiring in 1986 as a supervisor. He married the former Mary D'Alfonzo on April 29, 1961 at St. Peter's Church. "Chickie" was able to "fix things" and was always a great help to his family and many friends. Over the years he enjoyed boating and fishing on Casco Bay. He loved sports and was a great New England Sports Fan. He really enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events. For several years he coached Little League and often said there are "No Errors in Little League". He was predeceased by his sister Mary Gedaro in December 2013. "Chickie" is survived by his beloved wife Mary McCartney of Portland; two daughters, Theresa Dufour and her husband Edward of Gorham, Mary Ann Casey and husband Edward of Lafayette, CA; two sons, James M. McCartney, Jr. and wife Michelle of Windham, John McCartney and wife Gaylene of Westbrook; 10 grandchildren, EJ, Molly, Gemna, Cameron, Caleb, Clayden, Olivia, Daniel, Mary, Eddie; a niece, Susanna Gedaro of Florida. Visitiation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited 8:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home followed by a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church, 673 Stevens Ave., Portland.
